Warped Wings an Angel Sings

Funky hairstyle
daring clothes stubborn stance
Big Sister looked down disapprovingly
into the glance of adoration
of a five year old

warped wings, an angel sings

Pulling a face of disgust
Big Sister elbowed body small
twisting the secret sword of mock
smugly answering to God's call in song
pierce placed through the young
perceptive heart

warped wings, an angel sings

Feigning unawareness
heavy boot stepped
on the toe of a tender fairy foot
little darling leaped in hurt
Big Sister meeting Mother's eye
in faked innocence

warped wings, an angel sings

Closing the shared Hymnbook
Big Sister continued to sing the psalm
known half by heart
ignoring blue tearing eyes
turned up in questioning alarm

warped wings, an angel sings

Author notes

Seen yesterday in Church. How many big sisters do this to their baby sisters, often adoring them ...?

My older brother is surprised when I tell him of the terror I lived under.

Cant some children be cruel. I was pretty much the same to my younger brother, but strange as it seems we are very close now often seeking each other out for a natter or a beer. This kind of free verse often left me cold but I'm acclimatising myself to some of you freeverse poets. I honestly like this as it stirred old wounds..Thank you for that...Dan

Well that is sad, but not uncommon between siblings. It's a bit heart-breaking to think about, but it's the situation that makes me sad, not the poem. You recreated it well with the "blue tearing eyes" and "glance of adoration" but this did not break my heart. Thank you for entering.

Thank you so much, Tilly T ...

for the Silver in your contest.

I worked for Child Line actively as a volunteer for a decade, and still do by helping survivors to heal during individualized sessions of creative writing. And I have learnt one very important thing: there is no big or small instance of abuse. Emotional abuse is just as profound as physical or sexual abuse! Breaking the spirit of a small innocent child is just as criminal as killing a man with a gun.

Thank you for hosting this contest. It is an act of love -- to let souls voice their deep set emotions and to share in it.

Much love to you and all the best with your poetic endeavors.

      Myra

      It broke my heart ...

but then: I am from another era. I am forever hurt by the subtle murdering of souls taking place constantly on all levels of society. Good luck with your contest.
