Great Serpent Tears

Missing image
In a land so dry,
And dust-filled air,
Crow's calls echoed through these desert lands.
As we awaited those rains,
Hunger doomed us, as did man,
We grew desperate, for a grieving sky.

This Outback once filled with grace,
Bound by love and the Great Serpent above,
We grew together,
Lived together,
Soon to have our fate drive us apart.

The four Wise Ones of all parts of nature,
Came together to speak for us all,
Stepping out, they reached for the skies,
As we listened on, a prayer they recited,
To the Great Serpent above.

“Great Serpent of life and all that is,
Hear our desperate pleas,
Fill our hearts and souls with your tears.
Show us we’re still brothers,
Pardon our misdeeds,
Your mercy is in need,
To replenish our Outback lands.”

A great booming came,
Followed by a blinding light,
As grey clouds veiled the skies,
A shudder felt beneath our feet,
Brought about those awaited rains.

First but a trickle,
As if Great Serpent understood,
And answered the Wise Ones’ prayer,
Then came a sudden downpour,
We watched on as the land graciously embraced those rains.

Our brothers rejoiced,
As they danced in the rains,
Tears of happiness were shed.
Our once dry Outback,
Now dampened from rains,
The gift of rain now sacred to us all

“Great Serpent of life and all that is,
You showed us through your grieving skies,
There is hope for us still,
Together again, brothers under one sun,
Waiting for a time,
For your rains to come again.”

Author notes

This poem is in a way in sequel to my poem "A Kangaroo Ode," but also has it's own story.
"The Great Serpent" or "The Great Rainbow Serpent," is the creator of all things in Aboriginal Culture.
So I just thought I'd combine an earthy/spiritual theme to it and this was the outcome.
I hope you like it.

Oh, I think it a most excellent write indeed, poignant and intense and filled with "primative" faith in the goodness of the prime mover! loved it. (A fine illo as well...I'm wondering if you have seen photos of the serpent mound in Ohio, which is some 800 years old...)

What a fantastic view into a different culture :-) There's a lot of beauty in the Outback that you tap into while writing this poem, I can imagine it was a great experience to put this poem together and think of all its meanings. Thank you for sharing and best of luck in the contest

    ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!

I love to read about cultures from around the world, especially old ones from ancient times. One of my favorites are the aborigines of Austrailia. Even now in this increasing small world they hold true to their beliefs. I have always felt that they know more about their land and spiritual things than we ever will.
