Two trees

anyone would love
the majestic elm out front,
proudly waving its leaves in
the breeze and taking
its fill from the sun.

but you reserve affection
for the crooked fellow struggling
in the shadow of the building,
trunk broken and growing
nearly horizontally,
clinging to drooping
leaves;

you appreciate the beauty
of small, tenacious things.

I straightened a little
the day your eyes
fell like summer sun on me.

    Wow, this is awesome.
The imagery of the tree, "taking its fill from the sun" fresh line..
    And "crooked fellow struggling
in the shadow of the building," like the voice of the poem in that last stanza that is powerful!
    I loved that!

What wonderful sentiments here Mallig. This is such a strong piece; for me, it tells the story of appreciation. Whereas so many (trees) could easily become jealous of the beauty of the 'stately' one mentioned first, your 'weakly' one can teach the value of gratitude nicely. Happy...made a bit stronger by being noticed.

I really like to notice things in nature, what they do and how they look when they're just doing what they do.
I like your use of figurative language...of course creates strong imagery.
I hear your writer's voice very well.

Some things have to struggle a little harder to stake their place in the world. But sooner or later the light shines on them too! Wonderful poem!

I grew up in the same house that my father did. In the frontyard was an elm that shaded our family all my life (his too). It must have been 8 feet around. The house is still there...
That tree and my dad...well. -c
