The moon boasted itself
in a perfect sphere.
despite being
partially obscured
by silver lined clouds,
and it resiliently
shone through in spurts.
My feet sank
in cold sand
that had let go
of the days warmth.
The world,
my world of the moment,
appeared in silhouette
and I comfortably
blended into it.
Cattails and dune grass
devoid of any detail
swayed gently
coaxed into action
by cooling ocean breezes.
I heard the surf
before I saw it
thundering it’s applause
against the shore
in a hypnotic beat
of unconstrained rhythm.
It summoned me
compelling me to
appreciate its awesome
majesty
on its merit alone.
Eventually
my journeying legs
took me around
the last obstructing
sand blasted dune,
and it revealed itself to me
in rolling inky darkness.
The swells
touched only slightly
by the silver moons
attempts to shine,
tumbled in waves
of blackness
set against dark gray
mottled skies.
Until inevitably
they reached
the hard packed
crystallized granules of quartz
the glaciers
had long ago deposited
and forgotten.
Then…
They broke
in grandiose explosions
of a stark white
combination
of sea,
air,
motion
and sand.
They screamed of defiance
against night,
against complacency,
against stagnancy.
Their spray washed over me
in a refreshing mist
of magnificence
that sat
like salt flavored heaven
upon my moist lips.
And the ocean spoke to me
booming its wondrous tale
of perseverance, movement,
and rebirth,
directly to my soul.
Then…
as if staging it’s grand finale,
the angry riptide,
in a chaotic
churning of direction,
pulled back
what it rightfully owned.
Completing the cycle…
