The Journey Ahead

I sat there parked along the edge of the street with my trunk open wide
He'd spent the day loading me up with all his bags and boxes.
I felt the door slam closed and heard him walking around
Inside me, he started me up and idled me on the side of the street.

He spoke to her with such kind words.
"I'll be back again one day." I heard him say.
She had no idea how untrue this was, but still
I saw a faint smile break through her tear ridden face.

He held her tight and let her cry
She hadn't seen this coming, but I had.
He'd been telling me about our journey for months.
He just hadn't told her, the one he said he loved.

His other friends were there too,
But they weren't crying, or showing emotion at all.
He hugged them all, one by one.
These were the people he'd spent his life with, the life he was leaving behind.

He turned back to the girl and put his arms around her shoulder
Like a mother holding a baby,
he looked at her with such adoring, pleading eyes.
I knew he didn't want this to be their goodbye.

I'd miss having these people inside of me.
I'd remember all the times we shared.
These people were my family too
I was being forced to leave just as he was being drawn away.

He gave her one last kiss
Then turned away as they said their silent goodbye.
He didn't look back as he got inside
started me up and drove away.

We were on our way to a distant land
I watched as they all waved goodbye
But only her face stood out of the crowd
I didn't want him to leave her behind, but this happens all the time, right?

    welcome to all poetry

Unfortunately I think it does happen too much, but life happens, you have to deal and move on. Very well written piece, and from such an interesting perception.
