Mutton Dressed as Lamb
Photo: Junji Kurokawa
You stare at me young chap
with a gobsmacked open mouth
that has nothing to say for itself.
So what if I wear a hat
and a Grandpa cloth
to cover my lack of hair.
Your mouth now half opened -
exhale a miserable stammer,
“So so so sorry Ma..am...”
Sorry for what, my love?
My wrinkles all over my face
or for the dentures
I can’t be bothered to wear.
You are still not convinced
that the svelte silhouette
you saw in the crowd
is not your school mate -
that by a twist of “face”
I’m eighty not eighteen.
What a nasty trick that
Rowdy Girl cap; actually, I feel
sorry for you, young chap,
as you have still to find
among this multitude of hats
your school sweet heart.
I bet after this embarrassment
you won’t dare for a while
to shout at the top of your lungs
“Come off it, silly tart, give that
hanky back to Grandpa!”
