Arrogantly fawning over air brushed images
in overpriced corner store magazines:
plump lipped, fake, Barbie doll smiles
of perfectly straight, synthetically whitened teeth,
faux tanned skin, blemish-less, framed
nose job, boob job, botox, no laugh lines,
italicized heading reads:
How To Be Happy Like Me!
in pink bubble gum letters,
words taken like scripture to heart.
Saving every cent that can be spared,
skipping the bus for the dollar twenty five
borrowing money to pay the bills
every penny is one step closer
to the ultimate goal.
Hair dye, contacts, teeth whitening,
diet pills, new cloths, sun glasses,
under the table botox, tummy tuck,
ears piercing, tattoo removal,
she buys on credit, falling into debt.
Skip breakfast once or twice
one salad for lunch,
three diet pills to curve the hunger,
dinner can wait until tomorrow.
Numbly she looks in the mirror
at her own blond haired, self created expression,
a mole that she can not get rid of
a wrinkle on her forehead
childhood scar on her chin
and she can not seem to get any thinner.
Finger down her throat to take off a few pounds,
surgery to remove that mole,
a few more shots of botox,
overpriced ointment for that scar,
no matter what she tries to do
she can not fill her empty soul.
Pain cannot be air brushed away
but this she never learned.

Perfectly written! So true all that you've stated and besides looking at all those artists and filmstars and imagining they could look like a barbe with no mistakes, they just have to realize that no one is perfect even those famous people.
I hope many read this and wake up, a nice thought to write about this.

Perfection is in the eye of the beholder, and the beholder sees with their heart
So sad.
So many peplethat are already beautiful, and they waste their selves away because the magazines tell them that "This Is What Men Want", and it's so not true.
Then their are all the wonderful girls who mayhaps aren't the prettiest of external features, but their hearts and delightful (or cynical) personalities make them attractive, because lots of guys don't really want to date a pretty dumbass, they want somebody they can be with to make them enjoy life.
In truth, sure, a man wants to be with a beautiful woman, but he's also happy to have a decent person by his side, who will be good to his heart (and ego sometimes) and not care about the facsimile magazine made whore look that often times tends to make him think such a girl is shallow and vain for so much effort to look like something she is not.....tis not harsh, but the brutal truth.
But, what do I know, im just a normal little man with meek little voice in a big, wild world.
Anyhell, still love the write, amid the sad the sad thoughts of good friends who damage themselves internally (physically and mentally) trying so hard to create perfect.

Lovely descriptions you've placed here about how insecurity can go too far

Although, it would be nice not too bunch the descriptions up too much because it may be hard for the reader to place in mind but to me, this is fine as to show the several facts people do to get the so-called beauty.
All in all, I immensely enjoyed this wonderful write and the last few lines were striking. To improve this write, maybe lessen the descriptions or organize it in a different way for the thoughts to flow freely in the reader's mind

Isn't it just sickening how society is today, so superficial. Disgusting in my opinion, I think it's fine how it is right now. If I was to do anything to it, it would be to add more 'poetry' into it I suppose. (I hope I worded that right.)
But Great job indeed.

I like it just the way it is
