The Giver and The Taker

There once was a place in time
where souls departed as one
and the sun bowed its head
with the moon in unison

It was a magical place
a place of flowers and trees
a place of birds and bees
a place of serendipity
a place of serenity and love

The man did not realize
what would happen
when he took it all for granted
that he would reap what he sowed
when he committed unlove

But the other man did know
He knew what would happen
He delayed all he could
but the delays only made
the avoidance of the inevitable more futile

Now the giver cannot give
and the taker cannot take
perhaps it was a dream -
an imagination that was fake

    slightly confused

It's wonderfully lyrical and there's something almost Grimm Fairytale about it. But as for guessing the story: I'm thoroughly lost/confused.
My first impression was that a gay affair ended poorly. A married man ending a relationship when his lover hoped it would continue.
But I already expect this guess to be entirely wrong, at least I guessed!

Thanks. It is indeed a gay love affair at its end, an unequal love affair in which both people were more happy to be in love than were happy to love each other.
