Tobacco fields went on for miles in all direction.
The plants looked like cabbage my Grandfather grew;
only they were enormous in size,
and screamed unreal to me.
The day had past without a single ride, my thumb
was in need of some rest and a bit of magic.
The bluegrass night warmed me like a baby
wrapped within a Mothers love. I fell into
a deep sleep, slipping further away from
passing headlights, and thoughts of tomorrow.
Perhaps it was foolish to think Florida would greet
this leather tramp with open arms; that the white sands
and warm waters would somehow fill the emptiness within.
But my feet carried me still, like a salmon heading upstream,
sure of my purpose, unaware of the future.
Half a spring and summer went by, finally the sea had found
me smiling. I was gifted memories that will last a lifetime.
Emptiness was no more, as I gazed into the beauty of
a sunrise, over an endless blue.
