Old Man

I wonder what you're running from
Old man..
Is this how it's done?

Jack Daniels
Juice Box (grape).
Rocking chair, and
wooden stool.

Old man..
we've been here for days
after hours - since
before I was hungry
and after, I guess...

This paint finished drying
when you were my age you know.

I may be four
but I can see the residue of disappointment
in the crevices of your face -
particularly around your cataract eyes.
You've seen there's nothing to live for
and I don't care if there is.

Take my hand
and we will walk to..
You know grandpa,
your hand is as cold as the glass

in your other.

(Sigh)

I guess someone has to tell your son
that you loved him.

this was a unique take on this prompt and a deep one. we all want to be told we are loved, and shown it, too. in this, it seems the love of the dad was in trying to escape and the child wanting attention, waiting there until in the end, when the love and respect is passed down to the grandchild who sees him as he is... and will be the one to pass on love to the father, like a bridge.
