Missed the Boat

I know I said I loved her once,
but what was done was not what was said.
The day I truly met her
was the day she turned up dead.

While we're on the subject,
can we change the subject, please?
The morbidity of our conversation
Spreads like a disease.

If so-and-so said this-and-this,
and we were such-and-such.
Our bonds had not a leg to stand on,
why was it our crutch?

And now it looks, it seems as if,
we've pulled it off so well.
Don't talk again, about our love.
Damn it all to hell.

Was it really worth it?
You must think I'm insane.
I suppose I've missed the boat because
there's nothing left to gain.

I'm certainly uncertain,
or at least I'm pretty sure I am.
If our love held no water,
why am I the tool who built the dam?
