As it was meticulously putting the finishing touches on its web.
- Up, Down, Loop, Up, Down, Loop, Up, Down, Loop…
Making ones self at home in the rear of my house,
Just beneath the dim light above the screen door.
I had been watching for about an hour,
mesmerized by the artistry.
Taking note of the light gleaming on each strand,
Like fresh snow glistening in the moonlight.
It’s eloquence and beauty comparable to fine lace.
I delicately opened the door ajar
To take a close and final look at the newly woven tapestry.
Then seemingly all at once I had destroyed it,
Slicing my hand effortlessly through the web
and promptly stomping on the fallen spider.
But it is best not to give it a thought…
It is after all, only a bug.
Author notes
I suppose it’s rather odd to describe what I'm getting at via an arachnid – but the direction I was attempting to take this piece in is simply:
At times I think we cast aside the idea of something because of general opinion of it or perception of it. Take the spider, outwardly it’s not exactly adorable – it does however create works of art through its webs and helps our environment. Because of how we look at the spider we don’t see it for what it is, we let our fear or impulses get the best of us.
The same can be said about relationships, sometimes you can meet someone and appreciate so much about them and find a lot of beauty and likability in them but because of inhibitions we tell our selves it’s “best not to give it a thought” and try to disregard it. In doing so, we destroy what might have been beautiful.

Loved your poem but, spiders give me the shakes. I do understand where you are coming from with this piece. I've seen friends turn up their noses at men in dirty work clothes and gush over the guy with soft hands and nails prettier than they would get at the salon. Duh! Do the math. On guy is leaving work the other is looking for someone to pay his bills. I love how you got your point across with this little spider. They still give me the willies. LOL!
