I wished I had a fairytale to compose. One of knights and dragons, and beautiful princesses in the throes of distress. And now, it seems I do though I would give anything to take it all back. Be careful of what you wish for ... It just might come true.
Once upon a time there had been a beautiful young princess who, by no means of her own hand, became entangled with one of the most fearsome dragons in the land. The locals called him "Cancer" and he was known to them as the "silent killer." This was perhaps what gave him his deadly reputation of a masked, and charming thriller.
Up until that fateful day, the princess had lived life in her own gentle way. With music and laughter and love galore, like all humans, she was still seeking more. A handsome young knight to call her own, a faithful steed and castle of stone. And once she acquired all on her list, she'd promised contentment - you get the gist.
But as always with life, things didn't go to plan and came the day she met "Cancer" the dragon. He leapt forwards and tightly he clung with his teeth to her skin 'til he'd infected her lung - full of poisonous venom, and because she fought, as a final dark blessing, he gave her a clot that swelled up her leg like never before she she couldn't walk. Then he gave a roar, to signal to all who lived her place, that she'd battle'd and lost - and now, time was a race. Then dragon flapped his wings in and ungraceful arc, and day turned to night, and he flew away in the dark but the princess lay still, and crumpled in the field for her body was worn out and she had no saving grace to wield.
The King and the Queen had their lives turned upside-down when their beloved princess was found unconcious on the ground, and they rushed to the centre where they had bandages in store only to be told that for this venom, there was no cure. "Dragon's the silent killer," one man said without tact, just coldly and monotonous as he stated his fact. The Queen gave a scream, and fainted on the floor whilst the Princess' pain just grew more and more. They bandaged her and soothed her with modern day care but she became weak, and lost all her hair. It fell out one day as she ran a comb through, and made the Princess cry - the royalty didn't know what to do.
So the King set a reward to all the folk in the land that they would live in luxury at his own right hand if someone could find a cure for his child, or track down the dragon out in the wild and bring him in, tied up with ropes and chain so the King himself could force him to tell how to cure his daughter's pain. The townsmen ran wild with desire for this prize and greed began to sparkle in all of their eyes. They went to the forest with pitchfork and fire to burn out this dragon and bring him in to the Sire.
But the dragon was wily, and flew far, far away, to a country where nobody knew of his name, and there he lay low, and kept himself alone until the saga died down, and he wouldn't have to hide on his own. Meanwhile the Princess battled against his inflicted curse but her pain never eased, and she slowly got worse.
The ending of the story, I see the question in your eyes but what can be said - you want to know if she dies? This I can't say, for her story's not over yet for this Princess is real, she's someone I have met. I pray every day that this dragon will be found and cured of his venom, then run out of town. I pray every day that her fairytale will end with a handsome young prince, and cancer on the mend. I pray every day that a cure will be grown, and clear my sister of cancer so she can fully come home.
Author notes
This [does] have a rhyme within it. Is based on fairytale style in a story that so many people who read it will be able to familiarise with.
It is still being edited now and then.

Well, according to AP it's under the limit. But, when I looked, it was different. Plus, this was more of a story than a poem. I didn't even notice the rhyme scheme until you pointed it out in the end. Yes I read it to be fair. But, it's not quite what I'm looking for. All in all, it's a great piece. It's just not what I needed in this contest.

Powerful piece, and yes, within it are pieces and places that many of us recognize or mirror.
Well done!

Aweee!! This is truely amazing!! I absolutely love this heartbreaking tale, it is so hard to deal with such evil things, and turning it into a fairytale that is full of hope and love is admirable! Very well done and if it is true, I do hope that this fairytale has a happy ending for all. Much love! Thank you for entering and good luck!
