Steel dust

Missing image
Back when cowboy's made the boots they wore
cattle drives were oft family affairs.
Fast with a gun to protect your own,
best be good with a pony son, earn your money.

Steel dust well broke horse,
lay to the side,
rope found it's place every time.
turned on a dime, never slipped or gave trouble,
picking up stragglers.

Lust grew in one man's heart for a woman,
brown eyed girl from Sweet Onion river.
Fool could not see, how she loved that man with the steel dust steed, when he made his move on her.

Cool in the evening gone to collect wood for the morning he followed her. Never did this girl beg,as she spit in his face as unwanted advances became a fight against rage and rape.

The man with the steal dust pony rode in early morning with the others tired, thirsty and hungry calling for his brother, brown eyed girl from Sweet Onion River was cooking sonofabitch stew, cleaning her knife by the fire light.

Bruised and damaged not her self at all,yet that cowgirl stood oh so straight and tall, pointed he lies yonder way,I killed em for trying to take something that was not his to take a tall.

The camp grew quiet, turned his back upon the woman, buried his brother scorned her, in his grief struck out.

First light came and went as did the cowgirl on the back of that steel dust pony, riding low leaving no trail, having left two brothers dead, horse stealin, running from a posse calling her name.

Brown eyed girl from Sweet Onion river is wanted, never to go home again, hiding and out riding the hanging rope.trying to get far enough away to start a new life.

Ride wild angel ride.

Moral:  You may play a dead man's hand, when you play against a cowgirl. Women fight hard to survive.

Oh I love this poem! I love how your poetry always tells a story, and a good one at that. I love the image of this woman - strong and soft all at once, determined to do things her way despite it all. Very, very well written!

I remember a line from a movie. The man, thought to be a freind, reached out and kissed a girl. She pulled back and called him the enemy. She explained that the enemy took what didn't belong to them. It is a great story. A simple clip of history
(howbeit fiction) that would change the life of a cowgirl forever...through no fault of her own. I read it twice.

I like this story! of course, any story where a woman avenges herself catches my interest, being the weaker sex doesn't always mean being violated by the stronger, when we have the right stuff to defend our honor.

  • an interesting tale of adventure from the wild west...glad she stood her ground, and gladder yet that she escaped the hangman's noose. An entertaining read. Well done.

When one must stand alone in the face of injustice and adversity, they must also be willing to stand and fight regardless of the consequences. A well penned piece of bravery and the fight or die justice of the old west tales.
    Ride cowgirl, ride.

You can write one heck of a western. Old Zane Grey himself couldn't do no better.
