For when learning of mitosis the best of us are dazed
But don't fear fellow students, this poem may help us out
To learn just what mitosis is really all about
You see when cells need to divide asexually perforce
They scratch their heads and think and say "Mitosis works of course!"
But while they're in the interphase developing themselves
They say, "I'm sort of nervous 'bout becoming daughter cells"
The chromatin condenses into chromosomes to start
The prophase which you could say is really the first part
Then you see the sister cromatids start to condense
The nuclear envelope breaks down. Oh! the suspense!
And then begins the metaphase, it doesn't take much time.
The chromosomes migrate to the equator and align.
If you look close then you can watch the chromosomes divide
And become daughter chromatids, the same from every side.
The anaphase is next in line, the cells soon reach their goals,
The chromatids will seperate to the opposite poles.
You can see the splindle fibers pulling them apart
Then you can get ready for the telophase to start!
And now theres enough chromatids for 2 whole cells combined
Each chromatid gets long and thin as it starts to unwind
Mitosis now is over with, but two cells are still one
Cytokinesis must occur before the cells are done.
Don't get confused, cytokinesis isn't a real phase
The cells just have to separate and go their separate ways
They form a new cell membrane which divides them into two
And now they both are daughter cells ready to start anew!
They both go into interphase, the whole thing starts again
But mitosis starts with prophase, they just grow up until then
My brain hurts after learning this, I hope it's not necrosis
Because it isn't over yet, I have to learn meiosis!
Author notes
I joked about writing this all the last school year and never got to it. I got close at one point, but it was terrible. There's some spots that seem a little forced, and a few rhymes I don't like to do too much, but they were sort of unavoidable.
Please tell me if you see any mistakes in the phases I listed here. I didn't go from my memory (fortunately) but instead had a few articles open describing the phases, but I still could have gotten mixed up.
As usual, all comments returned.

beautiful
Im new to this site if you cannot already tell but this is a very memorable poem how creative and interesting and I do not see any mistakes in your rhymes. I wish they had used a teaching method such as this in my bio classes. Your poetry is very Intriguing and I am going to be reading alot more of your poetry soon. -
science and poetry mix
Very original and quite fun to read. The technicalities have already been mentioned so let me stick to enjoyment factor. I love when a poet goes outside the box and takes on a subject beyond lost love and woe-is-me stuff. This verse is a great fun read that flows well and I love it. Great job!

Hmmmm
What can I say that hasn't been said? This is amazing and I agree with the commenters so far. You probably don't remember film strips where you advance one screen at a time, but I do and it was almost like each line was a new screen. Very nicely done. Be sure I will make sure your fav teacher sees this. (And everyone else too.) I think if you have doubts about the flow or the rhyme, then review it. I however, can't see any. This could definitely be used as a classroom tool and with the help of this tool, anyone could write an essay covering this topic. I know you so well and yet you continue to amaze me. Congrats.

wow
I remember learning this at school and never would I have thought of putting it into a poem... you clever thing!! Great work, it does not seem forced at all

This is so completely off topic, but while I was reading this I was thinking about how good rhyming verse makes things more memorable... and how that could be used for studying. Sure, it's a little goofy, but it is the type of thing where you could remember this and have it leap to mind on a test sometime.
I remember in middle school we had a "preposition poem" to help us learn a list of prepositiony words to get the concept.
It's hard to find a way to place and categorize lighter and sillier poems on AP. Your author notes don't need to be so apologetic. It was a solid piece. Those who enjoy it should definitely read your other work though.

Looking back at it, it isn't quite as bad as I first thought. A few lines I was typing and thinking 'No, I can't write that, it's way too stupid' but I can't pick out too many of those places now. I'm always overly-perfectionist when I first write something. Thank you for the comment, and assuring my fragile little ego that this poem isn't as terrible as I thought.
I only wish I'd written this when I was actually learning about Mitosis.

wow, you made poetry out of biology - that is science. enjoyed the rhyme - didn't feel forced to me.

Wowser, this is one impressive write, and my head hurts now. The rhythm and rhyming are very solid, and you took a topic that has a ton of difficult words to work with, and did a really nice job. I imagine this would be a big help to anyone who is trying to memorize this stuff!!

I wouldn't know. We already learned it. My friend was mad that it's no use now. It was fun to write nonetheless, and I think I have a better understanding now after all that research!

*feels her brain melting* i was never one to really listen in science or biology, and this really made my brain wanna melt down my spinal cord.
thanx alot
but honestly, well written, even if it did make my brain hurt

OW! My brain! LOL
That was great! The beat you built up with the rhythm and flow in this poem keeps it fast paced and interesting. I didn't think this was bad by any means. I think you even covered what mitosis is in the start... I just think the guy that commented below forgot about it by the time he got done reading cause there are so many steps
As I read I was starting to picture the old films I had to watch in high school biology and anatomy, and could see the process exactly how I remember watching it. So, kudos to you for writing such an informative, image filled poem about something as tiny and unnoticable as mitosis. I can actually see this being a poem used to inforce the teaching of the process. Something this clever would have definately drilled it into my head!

nice rhyme. great flow. what the hell is mitosis? i know how it works now i just dont understand. any way keep up the good scribes

Mitosis is a form of asexual reproduction in cells. They basically divide, but a lot more goes into that than just splitting in two apparently! Thanks for the comment.
