The Red Moon

His howl echoes throughout the silence
A warrior’s cry underneath the red moon
Inhuman lust creeps upon him searching for blood

His thirst is unquenchable his speed furious
Tearing through the forest, hunting for fresh meat
Sniffing the air he stops, searching for any scent

Fangs bared, he senses another male’s presence
A friend turned evil, who hunts to destroy must be killed
Faster then the human eye, he rushes to the fore and pounces

Both wolves meet in a head on collision, a battle of wills
Claws digging, fangs biting, the scent of blood hangs in the air
Two powerful bodies moving in rhythm of the kill

Silence echoes though the night, everything is still
Victory shines through his eyes, as he howls to the red moon
The other wolf is dead, his blood spilled on unholy ground

Turning away he runs through the darkness, never to be seen again
Knowing what’s to come, smiling his satisfaction
One wolf stands proudly as he disappears into the night…

Wow what a powerful write.. I love the way you have described the power and the stealth of the wolf... The wolf is my Animal Totem and my Teacher in my Wiccan/Pagan path.. I should listen to him more....

Often then not we don't listen to the things that we must. Thank you and glad you enjoyed this write.

  • I see it not only as a poem about wolves but as one of any indomitable spirit prevailing in a harsh survival of the fittest.

I have enjoyed the notion of wolves ever since I read Jack London's "Call of The Wild" as a boy. They are fascinating creatures aren't they.

I absolutely loved this piece. Masterful flow and technique. Bravo, reminds me my time in Alaska. I wonder though, is this portraying your emotions? or is simply an observation?
