a mystery of magic

his lips were sugary sweet
with bubbly enthusiasm,
as he melted his lies with memories
we never held but just pretended

I always just pretended
when I had nothing better to believe in.

he was slender and graceful
and was everything I lacked and swooned for
we walked hand and hand
as the rain pulled the smell of earth into our clothes

I don’t know if he was hiding like I was
he talked of bruises you couldn’t see
and his eyes glossed over when we talked
of what we really missed as children

he is not so far away now,
though I can’t bring myself to see his face
I walk a different path now
pausing to caress flower petals,

that maybe carry their scent to him as well.
