What Dreams Are Made Of

What's in a dream?

__lost to time and peace of mind,
___crosshatched tightly
____into warm, thick quilts

______A flickering wisp of mental notion
_______catches the eye with color,

_______for the dreamer to behold.
______The ocean shines like crystal,
_____and the stars are as diamonds.
____A bright orb reflects a distant star
___upon the sandy shore,
__illuminating folks you recognize
_to dance in the moonlight.
But is there sound?
_No one can tell for sure;
__it must be imagined,
___because surely all of this is.
____Then you hear the whistling wind
_____and feel its soft touch on your cheek.
______It coaxes a spin-around,
_______facing a forest, freshly struck
________by the new and radiant dawn.
_______Every leaf it's own color,
______Translucently coloring the scene
_____in shades of red, green, and yellow.

___Even through this truth,
____you can't deny this:
___it is when you finally see
__that you are truly awake
_will you never want to dream
of anything else.

Author notes

Fun stuff. ^_^ I tried getting a little wave going there - that's why all the underscores are there. Hope you enjoy!

Love the format. The wave is super cool!

You always have the best diction and descriptions.

The idea of dreams/reality being threads woven into some elaborate fabric has often crossed my mind lately - ever since a friend brought it up two years ago. He argued that there was another dimension that we, as humans, are not able to see. Something about the fabric of our reality preventing us from seeing into other realities? I can't remember how he put it exactly, but this reminded me of that.

Interesting point about sound in dreams. I hear my alarm clock in my dreams. I hear made-up sounds in my dreams also. Because my dreams are so intensely realistic and vivid, I can never tell what was real and what wasn't!

The lightning striking the sand is awesome. John has always loved that.

So the ending is very positive and.... wow... almost enlightened! You are so great at this kind of thing, Daniel! You're always so optimistic. I envy your ability to do that.

You are an awesome poet, friend, and... so it seems... philosopher!

    Thanks for entering!

    • And you always seem to have the longest comments. ^_^ (That's a good thing, by the way. ) And as far as being optimistic, don't worry, I have my down times; but, the thing is, it's within our power to escape it, even when we don't feel like we can. Thank you for enjoying this, and you're quite welcome for the entry.

Hey! I can't believe it's been so long! Anyways, what an awesome piece. This is actually a really interesting topic that you have here. Because dreams are something that everyone has yet I never actually encountered a poem that's questioning what dreams are made of. Beautiful.

I wish you the best of luck in that contest!

It's amazing, I love the wave thing too. Actually, that was really creative... Awesome job, and goood luck with your contest... not that you need luck or anything, because you're great.

    • Wow, you're fast! Thanks for being such a supporter of my work. I'm glad you like it! I have more to write, still - at least four more, I think. Stay tuned!! (lol)
