Memorial, for Amera's Guardian Trixie

O mourn for our sweet guardian, she is gone,
For life has taken her beyond the grave.
There is no anodyne now that can save
Ourselves from time: we're every one a pawn.

And every thing that's born, in every dawn
Exults in glory: though the sky's a nave
Each Godly journey through Earth's architrave
Is just one step in Death's endless pavanne.

Oh how she walked her patient journey well!
Her life's what these memorial words compel:
She was a kind, a faithful, gracious friend,
And some things, though they pass, will never end,
And we'll remember her in joy and tears,
With a long sigh that lasts beyond the years.

Author notes

The kind of guardian Trixie was was the greatest and most faithful: her dog. She rose up from a humble abused beginning to become a true watch dog, a real guardian, and lived to a ripe old age. She will be truly missed.

Oh, such a beautiful tribute to one of the world's greatest companions on our journey here! This is finely constructed, lovely word choices and rhymes, and wonderful flow from line to line. Thank you for pointing this out -- I would have hated to miss it! Lita

Tiki, If you have read to Ellis any of the work that we, Blaze and Max the Wonder Cat, have given in dictation to Purrsanthema, you will have noticed that Trixie, named Trick See in dog, and Saber Tooth Battle Paw had a mixed marriage, that lasted wonderfully for years. Poor Saber Tooth, alas, is now a widower. I'm sure that Trick See herself, in dog heaven, would not want you to make friends with any dog unduly uncivilized, and would feel that a good round swat on the nose of said dog, if said canine gets too fresh, is always in order. As for that last remark about no fee.......... are you so sure?

I am moved to try to be a better cat.
This is saying quite a bit coming from me.
Trixie sounds like such a good pet that
I'll see if I can be good FOR NO FEE.

  • Aw.. Poor doggie. I remember when my guinea pig died, it's not the same but my dog was barking at the cage and I started crying.

    Sorry Amera!

This is truly stunning. It is a tribute, but it contains so much more. Deep insight (our birth is the first step in our walk to death) and beautiful imagery (I have to admit to checking up the definition of more than one word in the second stanza - I appreciate the education, ) All of which culminated in the final two pristine lines!!

I know this is some kind of sonnet, though I do not know of what variety (I still haven't gotten past the Shakespearean Sonnet yet.) Whatever it is, it is wonderful.

Thank you so very dearly! I learned my sonnets studying alone, and all these new varieties of sonnets that have been developed are rather new to me! I love Keats and his views on experimentation in sonnets. I meant this to be a usual Italian one, but the music wouldn't conform, and thus I felt the convention should be sacrificed to the meaning, and strove to bring the music up to a realistic fulfillment. As a hybrid, a sonnet-elegy, it takes its stand. Thank you!

Saber Battle Paw is also grieving: they had sort of a mixed marriage: canine-feline.
It will take a long time! At least Trixie had a good long life! She has left such a great void!

Oh, a most excellent tribute to a most faithful friend of Amera. It has been so long since I've seen the word "pavanne" used. I will have to take it up and dust it off and use it myself. Excellent poem from poet's stylus!

You are such a wonderful friend and I think this memorial poem is stunning. There is something very special in the hearts of animal lovers and that special love comes out when a friend needs the strength. I think my cat Saber misses Trix as much as I do but time has passed now and we’re all doing Ok. I know that as they say “All dogs go to heaven” and some day we will all be together again. Thank you so much for this poem and your friendship.

    Love,
    Amera♥

You're very welcome! It's an honor to be counted as your friend! Please kiss Saber Battle Paw for me, and for Max who will most probably, as time itself has wings, in the next year or so, also go to the place where all of us have wings! and from Max's buddies: Puss. N. Bootsky, Blaze, Gainspurrough, and tiny Missy Ping, give Trick See's friend some catnip!

    Dear Purrs,

I’m sure that many pets deserve to go
to heaven more than lots of folk I know..
I’ve yet to see a cat or dog do time
in prison for committing serious crime.

They may leave fur or hair on chairs or rugs
but usually don’t get hooked on drugs.
They seldom covet anything or steal,
unless it’s food they think is for their meal.

If God prefers souls that are full of love
to be around His throne in Heaven above,
the Angels should select, for Heaven’s gate,
the pets I know who have no shred of hate.

For any human I have not found yet
more trusty than a loving family pet.

I feel for Amera in her loss, knowing how deeply I mourned the loss of my own pets (two cats and my lovely dog) over the years. I hope that your beautiful tribute will give her some comfort.
Applause, love and hugs, XXX Hugh.

Our pets have also learned not to say hateful hurtful things, but act with the dignity that exhibits what true devotion means, which many humans have forgotten. To break bread with someone does not mean to sit at the same table, eat and vent vile venomous spleen upon our friends, acquaintances and family, and companionship, therefore being true family does not mean one should indulge in hurtful behavior or constantly make spiteful retorts: our pets are our truest friends, and in my opinion, often should be our role models. They do not judge us. They stand beside us. they defend us. They love us. And in the case of dogs, they often guide us. In all my years of knowing married couples, I have rarely seen a spouse do quite the same.

The problem with each faithful canine pet?
He does not share the span of human years
And when he goes, we mourn with many tears:
Then see a puppy, and we soon forget
That he will grow grey-muzzled like the last
Before our three score years and ten have passed.

This guardian's gone to sit at heaven's gate
And guide the souls to their celestial state.

We will all meet beloved pets again in time. If there are heavenly pastures for us, then how could dogs deserve them less? Best Wishes.K.

What wonderful lines to find amid prose comments on my work! Especially the last two wonderful couplets! There I know I'll find my beloved Francis! Although I'm a cat purrrson, yes I was, while working on an archaeological dig, befriended by a starving and abused young stray, who became my faithful companion for the next fourteen years. She was a black lab mix, and so very lovely, and she adored swimming, of course, and sometimes only needed to be shown something once to learn it.
