Patricia

Missing image
*~by Gregg Rowe~

Remember when I was eleven
I met you at my mother's marriage
every day thereafter
your beauty dazed me

We went to a rural school
rode the same yellow school bus
I tried to get the seat next to you
for the whole year

Remember on the week-ends
our families worked in the fields
you and I romped in the hay
threw hardened cow pies in the winter

Then we turned twelve
my favourite subject became biology

()()()()()()()()()()()()

Remember when we were sixteen
we starred in the class play
I wanted to steal a kiss
but was afraid

When we were eighteen
I asked you to be my date for graduation
but you were already taken

Now I'm twenty-seven
still thinking of when we were eleven
at my mother's marriage
wondering

if we could have become
kissin' cousins*

Author notes

Even if we did become kissing cousins and married it would be legal since this is a cousin by a second marriage so please, no IMs about incest please, because that is not what this poem is about.  It is about an eleven-year old boy who became infatuated with a girl who became his cousin only by marriage and the innocent relationship they had as children, it is only when the author turns twenty-seven he realizes the societal implications behind this infatuation.*

If you were ever raised in the country town where everyone knows who you are because you are almost all related, it is very embarrassing to find the town find out that you are in love with your step-cousin. The teasing still continues to this day and I am in my forties now! Gregg

Darn! snaps fingers I truly wanted to rile your feathers about kissin' cousin. j/k lol

This is so sweet yet so innocent. Reminds me of the pleasure of playing in the rain for the first time. The transparent drops falling in your hair and just for a moment it looks you're some 3D character glued into the folds of reality.

I need to get back under your wing so I can capture the moment so well as you. crawls under wing I dare you to make me move. lol

A quick question: Did you get inspired by the picture? Good job!

Young love is so innocent isn't it? The incest angle never really crossed my mind, as it was clear you never did anything. I think it is brave to express things like this, and damn the consequnces of an easily shocked society.

This is so sweet, so many times we tend to pass up the real thing, for dreams. Where does that get us. nice write.

Lovely write Gregg, I enjoyed reading it so very much, so pure and innocent at that age. My experience with my kissing cousin was in my teens and he patnered me to a Ball, on the way home he pulled the old trick "run out of petrol" after fighting him off and threatening to tell my mum, miraculously the car started! but we still remained friends until he died~Love to you~Joan

are you insuatinting that since I do not empty my e-mail account that I am dumb! Sorry tried to empty it earlier and it wouldn't let me...go figure that one out...as for American Idol, tell Simon to get the tampax out of his butt and be nice for a change and Paula-wants-a-cracker he new hair style sucks...I prefer the French show with much more class called Star Academié. The premise is too much to write here so I will e-mail you about it. You still don't beleive that walls can't talk, look closely in the mirror and you will see someone standing there in a white dress...that was my eavesdropper I was speaking of.

speaking of dumb...empty your email account...i couldn't thank you for your thank you because your mailbox is full! glad to hear you had the "o" without the "e"...quite an accomplishment!
i had another evening of culture...watched american idol...go george huff! i think he's otis redding reincarnate! you have no clue what i'm talking about...do you? that's ok, because i don't either!
    good night m'lord!

I too had a cousin that i was head over heals for. he was four years older and you know this made me smile because about ten uyears ago we were all sitting around at a family reunion thing and he was teasing me about being his shadow when we were younger. His wife asked if I had a crush on my handsome cousin... Ihad to blush, because me secret was out... He was so shocked, it had never occured to him. We had a good laugh and I get Christmas cards from theme every year with an XO at the bottom along with a smiley... Thanks for sharing..Susan

Liz dear, don't you know by now I like to be different...wait I am different lol...it's a private moment between two people because the picture itself is private...she's lying seductively on the piano watching him play the ivory keys and they are sharing a moment...what is that moment...the photograph speaks of love but there is a sharpness of a juxtaposition out of place and what is that...the paintings on the wall and the mirror in the background...the eavesdroppers...and then he tells (or sings to her) his secret...the rythmic flow of my poem...and yet it is a secret that is eloguant in a way...because they are composed...and will have to remain composed after the secret is revealed and the eavesdroppers in the room have heard

not sure why north americans become so upset with this type of "incest". my favourite niece and godchild is married to our second cousin - twice removed? can never figure that out...they live in norway, and there it is not that big a deal. certainly, in this case, there would have been no reason for the two cousins not to become "kissin' cousins". at first i thought this was a personal tale gregg...until i saw the age of the author.

i love these one hour contests renee holds...always so interesting to see the different take people have on the picture. while i adore your poem, i'm not sure if i understand the connection between the image and your words...
do not, i repeat, do not take this as criticism! i am just a naturally curious person...and it is interesting for me to discover what inspires people to write what they do.
oh oh...just heard on the news that "w" is on his way to wisconsin...i'm going into hiding now....

The ending was a twist. The poem is beautiful, and the authors comments makes it an innocent write. Very original, and unique. It must have taken some serious thought to pen this beauty. I had a kissin' cousin until I was 13. I was crazy about him, and yes our kisses were innocent, we became best friends as we got older, and I learned a lot from him about dating and guys, and he learned a lot from me. We are 2 days apart in age, he lives in PA. We still talk often. Thanks for entering the contest.

    Much Love,
    Renee

Thanks Jeff for your comment on Patricia, I realized that the ending might be a bit of a shocker so I added an Author's Note to it just to be safe. Having a hard time reading your front page of your library, maybe change the color to red or something so that the letters appearing on white would be easier to read, just a suggestion because I can't see the titles of the poems. lol

Now - I was very surprised to find that this piece did not have music or piano in it - yet I can see where the story could have been evoked by the picture. Nice job.
