[ Flickering on and off, ]

Flickering on and off,
Like one of those motion-sensored porchlights.
False hopes high
when an unknown body comes close.
Something not quite love when she touches him.
He watches,
As she falls in and out of
the arms of those guys.
He can see how she pretends,
but only with him.
That light stays on with him.
She cares enough to pretend,
so he stays.

He wears his heart on his sleve,
and she knows
Nothing can keep him away for long.
And touching him actually makes her feel.
He breathes just to see her,
she knows.
He smiles just to think of her.
Why she can't shake him,
she doesn't know.

All she wants is her blissful solitude.
Solitude she's trusted for so long.
But he touches her,
and her light flickers on one more time.

Author notes

Platform Moon-Jupiter One
"I grew up by the highway
She grew up by the sea
She hears her name in the sound of the waves
But the ships hold a message for me
I was born by the Highway
She's got sand in her hair
The lonely sounds of the traffic in the night
Will never reach her there"

  • oh, wow.
this has got to be one of the most heart-breakingly beautiful poems i've ever read. thank you so much for sharing it.

i especially liked the recurring image of the flickering porch-light. it tied the whole thing together and made it feel so real to me.
and the story between these two characters is intriguing. it makes me want to speculate about their dynamics and history because you've captured the essence of their relationship.

    • thank you
