Bruinnen

Her hair,
It winds,
Around the wind.
Around the world.

Taking the shape
Of the ocean waves
Which roll

Over thought,
And memory.

Head thrown back
To face the light,
Her lips open...

She sings.

The moon
Parts the clouds behind her.
But she
Calls a brighter spirit.

Waves crash,
Against jagged rocks:

Shore is long away...

Arms embracing,
Her dress captures
The salty breeze.

Dawn she is calling,
To calm the tide,
As she sinks...
Below the ocean.

Author notes

Prompt: Write about an object or landmark that is extremely important to you. Talk about the object like it's a person. Bury me in metaphor.

Bruinnen means "the Loudwaters" in Elvish (from Lord of the Rings) and is also the name of my French horn.

Anyway, lately I've been wanting to write a poem inspired by this picture: http://daggersspeaklouder.deviantart.com/art/Melodies-from-the-Deep-128276154
And then I saw the prompt and thought of my French horn, and I realized that my French horn is a lot like that picture, as odd as that sounds.
Basically, this isn't inspired solely by the prompt, so I hope that's okay. Feel free to DQ me if it's not.

From reading your author notes, the inspiration you got for this is really interesting. I find it fascinating that a picture reminded you of an instrument, just that combination alone is really stellar.

The piece was really smooth with all of the short lines. the imagery was really pretty and made me feel lonely because there was this sense of being completely engulfed. like there is no other choice but to slip beneath the waves.

also, I love how this piece could either be a word for word mythical kind of story or a metaphor. I don't know if it was your intent to create both but it was really stunning.

oh and before I forget, fantastic title :]

    thank you for entering.
