I stayed even when you didn't,
And devised ways to pass time
To make it feel like tomorrow
Isn't such a foreign concept.
I know what it's like to be abandoned.
I stayed even when you didn't
and I had to buy back the pieces
of myself that left with you.
It's embarrassing to defend my reasoning
And I struggle for excuses to explain why
I stayed even when you didn't.
I promised myself to stay until you return.
Calendars cant measure how long it's been.
"Time" is a word that can't shine what's been tarnished.
When you ask why it hurts I'll tell you
"I stayed even when you didn't."

I love how that prompt is put so beautifully into every stanza, how it sounds like a whisper while the rest of the poem is happening around it. Masterfully done! Thank you so much for entering this!
