What Poetry Is & Is Not...

Poetry is not to be written with your last drop of blood
on the edge of your bed dripping life on the floor.

Poetry is not an ode to a razorblade or an ode to a knife.
It is not a psychiatrist dispensing euphoria to the depressed;

Poetry will not cure, it should not be a cry for help
It is not useful in the quest to be known.

Poetry is not an excuse to butcher
the English language and call it "expression"

Poetry is observation. Poetry is metaphor,
Poetry is the million little things that go unnoticed.

Inspiration is infinite. Far from finite;
(...like death and razorblades...)

I say to the general population of people who call themselves "poets":
Go ahead and steal this. Maybe you'll learn something!

option 3:
"but sometime simply, there won't be any more, abstract or otherwise;
there'll always be money and wh*res and drunkards down to the last bomb,
but as God said, crossing his legs, I see where I have made plenty of poets
but not so very much poetry." - Bukowski ("to the wh*re who took my poems")

    Well you stumbled into some kind of contest they would call themselves brilliant I suppose they usually do and I do not know who they is lol. I agree with less than half of what you have to say here, no one should still the pen of a person wanting to write. If you do not like it simply pass it by. People are people and have varied lives and handicaps look at the emotional and mental make up of your own favorite poets and authors. Read some biographies would be my suggestion . To feature this with out your permission is beyond my comprehension. Though I may not agree with you on this one I find other poetry of yours fun to read and you quiet enjoyable.. what is wrong in AP land ?

    I agree with your thoughts written so well here. Poetry is communicating with others in a condensed, brief way. However that is merely my opinion and who am I but another person writing my own style of - er - ? writing. Dare I use the word "Poetry"?

    Well, I'll comment since I clicked. I don't really agree with this, perhaps you just wrote it off of the prompt. Poetry is expression, venting, art; haiku is observation...metaphors are...metaphors. I can't really agree with the write, it'd be better if it wasn't accusing a large portion of poets of not being a poet.

      These are not my points being spent someone featured it for me because they thought I'd get more contraversial comments... thanks though.

  • I think that is a bit unfair to those who pour their hearts out in different ways than we do.
    But still, this is great writing. You use descriptions so well. I am a bit envious. Good luck in your endeavors.

    Ah, an ode to poetry! Very well written, I agree with these words 100%. "Inspiration is infinite, far from finite", my favorite line. Great flow, good wording, nice imagery.

  • Excellent

    Ah, poetry is the expression of one's soul! Dark or light as it's tone may be, for each poet is a unique human being with a differing viewpoint, to some degree from anyone else's. Your's is a unique definition of poetry. Thanks for sharing, for I think you expressed your thoughts quite well.

  • This isn't really a poem either, but whatever it is, I agree and disagree. I think poetry about self-destruction, death, and euphoria is as good as any if it's done well; I've seen too many poets (some on this very site) write superb pieces about topics I thought were hackneyed beyond salvation to ever think a subject is off-limits. And I think the idea that a poem can't be a cry for help is very flawed. But I agree in the sense that to cover any of those themes you've listed, one would need to possess an uncommon skill that nearly none of the poets who write about cutting etc. have. Maybe there's some correlation - uncommonly good poets write about uncommon things. I don't know - either way, interesting thoughts.

  • Wow! Somebody's not happy. I do agree with you to an extent. For some though poetry is a diary, and if that includes cutting and repetitive teen angst that we've read a thousand times so be it. Who am I to say it's crap? ... I totally forgot what I was trying to say lol, but yeah, I feel where you're coming from. Good luck!

    Sounds like a dare

    I noticed you've added line breaks since the first post and it works well, much more fluid now. I agree with your poetic observations too! :

    "Poetry is not an excuse to butcher
    the English language and call it "expression""

    Thanks for sharing
