Sweet, Tortured Innocence

Chorus:
Sweet, tortured innocence,
you fought back the only way that you could.
You took the pills, your eyes were closed;
now his desire for you does him no good.

Verse 1:
“You’re beautiful,” he said to her,
which meant he must be drunk again.
He pulls her close, embraces her;
she shudders as he feels her skin.
She struggles, tries to free herself,
her eyes desperately pleading;
she breaks his grip, but meets his fist,
and now her lips are bleeding.

Pre-chorus:
So she writes a note to God,
says ready or not,
I hope you there to catch me when I fall.
If not, it doesn’t matter,
I’m leaving this disaster;
it feels like no one cares at all.

Verse 2:
She feels unclean, somehow obscene;
as she washes off with water.
What kind of man would lift his hand
and do these things to his daughter?
She cries at night, and cuts herself,
and hopes that he won’t come;
and if he does, he’ll just pass out,
and forget her when he’s done.

Bridge:
If only she knew,
that God really cared;
she might’ve made it through,
her life could have been spared.
Even though she couldn’t seen Him,
He was always there.
