following this ball of string back to its source (me)

the night rumbles by,
lightning and thunder sky
(rhymes get stuck in my head and fight
for release
and expansion)

which I am usually
all too happy to oblige,
these wants are mine as well,
though the neediness of this purring creature on my lap
makes the thoughts harder to come out,
fighting for my attention and affection
for fingers to be taken from keys
and applied along furry spine
(therapeutic touch with only experience
as my teacher)

the birds chirping remind of morning
of the rhyme that caught my inner eye,
thought the thunder has long since passed
and I'm left with only the smell of rain
coming in through the open window

interest(ing) me perhaps a bit too much
for I can't seem to put it to page
what these mornings where I am poetically alone
feel like
with the dawn creeping in and lighting on my fingers
(in more ways than one)
just as I'm craving to look out
and see stars
that passed with time,
without my noticing

(it was the full moon tonight;
I was going to remember it with candles
until I sat down before this idiot box
and started typing
and couldn't tear myself away)

and a sharp reminder from my lap creature,
claws in my mousing hand (instinct, perhaps)
takes me away from it all again

but I suppose I am content to sit here
under blankets
and purring
and write

though the moon doesn't set until six;
I can still greet the night
and the morning
all at once; two glories, one girl
(it's in my nature
to multitask)

Author notes

My cat continues to try and distract me from typing even now (ow!). Someone's going to get his claws clipped. . .

  • WHOA!!!! This overpowered my senses both mentally and visually. There are several things in this world that make me truly happy, and some of the first ones include my kitties, the night, the moon, and rain/thunderstorms...thanks so much for reminding me how much I love these things

  • LOL...

Oh how I enjoyed this poem...this visit with you as you pondered the night. That purring creature relaxed in your lap...the Moon shining and competing for your attention. Bless you for letting me have a brief vision of your heart and life. It seems a wonderful place to be. I loved the honesty and the realism...the calm...the restlessness...the combination of life as we live it!

Thank you so very much for sharing this write...I did so enjoy the journey!

    Blessed be~
