The Smile and the Disguise

The eve of destruction
To which there is little function

Life is just a joke
And we all laugh accordingly
And sputter and choke
Because it is all so funny

Center ring he stood
With bright, rambunctious, childish livelihood

Despite his young age
His façade sets an illusion
Of broken youth and no advantage
And he has only commenced the fun

The dark, onyx eyes
The smile that will cauterize

The dark, gouged out eyes
The smile and the disguise

Author notes

Written as a tribute to Heath Ledger's performance in "The Dark Knight" as the Joker. RIP.
