When I open my eyes
I see no mountain tops towering over the horizon
Or valleys formed by the crystal blue water
I see dirt roads that are cracked up
Pavement that is rough from many years of use
I see no blue jays chirping in the wind
Or woodpeckers thumping against the tree bark
I see dogs running from children
Cats lying on the ground of parking lots
When I close my eyes
The sound of the cars zooming by
The foul scent of the poison in our air
The shoves of people trying to get to work
It all vanishes
And for a moment
There is silence
No yelling or shouting
Just the chill of the cool breeze floating by me
The singing of the enchanting birds
Just for a moment
