sweet autumn (bronze trophy)

Missing image

summer days, so hot, so sticky

hover ever closer, their touch like fire

the heat seems to scorch my brain

and the birds look for solace in the trees

with temperatures rising

degree by degree, I stay secluded

in my airconditioned home

and long for the days of autumn

when once again a gentle breeze

is felt across the land

its coolness welcomed with open arms

sweet autumn, please come soon

the beauty of your amber leaves

the last sweet fragrance of your flowers

makes my heart sing with joy

summer’s heat forgotten

as leaves fall and school bells ring

the trees rehearse their play

of dancing naked in the rain

for all the world to see

come close sweet autumn

hold me within your arms

before winter’s unforgiving cold

hides autumn’s peaceful glow

Iwas driving this morning to work, i take all country roads, and its early in the morning and I watch the sunrise and what I love about this drive, is how beautiful it is in the fall, the bright yellows, the feiry red burning bushes around here, the red sumaks, the way the leaves start falling like glitter at times with the way the sun shines through the trees, this poem, is this, and the heat, but I like you dont like the cold few do, I imagine, but when I read the air conditioned home, I thought our summer was cold this year, so I am hoping our fall will be extra warm, if not I will keep reading poems to keep me warm,,,,,

I love autumn. I do miss being where you can actually enjoy it and it's colors. Florida is not too good in that aspect. Your poem really brought it back to me though and set me in the mood. Blessed Autumn

    My dear Dee:
Out here in California, our autumn is just starting to heat up 90s this week; and I can only hope it's a little better next week

However, I'm in the air conditioning, so I don't have to complain about the heat for the time being.

This poem is beautiful, a true testament to the power of imagery that buffets all of the senses. This is magnificent, and it's not hard to see why you placed in the contest

Thank you for sharing with us.

    All my best,
    Zach Estel.

Thank you. Autumn really is my favorite season and such a nice reprieve from our hot summers here in Phoenix. Our 110-115F temperatures which we've had all summer is just too danged HOT !!

I must agree....something about the fall season that is just so beautiful. We have been lucky in Ne. Our summers over the past couple of years has been very mild. It was really hot in 2006.

a good piece penned, ah you had a warm - hot summer then, lol not so here, it has been more like an autumn before autumn here other than one week a few weeks back, merry old england, where the rain loves rain. colourful atumn is strolling ever closer into the longing sighs.

Yes, our summer has been extremely hot, Ian. Today is the first almost cool day since summer began... well, it was actually still springtime but someone forgot to tell the weatherman.
Today we actually turned off the AC and opened up the windows ALL DAY!! It was about 80-82 degrees and a nice breeze blowing most of the time. It was like Heaven to be able to sit on the patio for as long as we wanted to for a change.

Thank you for the read and comment, always appreciated coming from you

      luv and

This is such a lovely tribute to my favorite season! Your last two stanzas are especially gorgeous. I always look forward to Autumn as the most stable for moderate temperatures, as well as the beauty of its changing colors. Spring is pretty but the weather changes so much.

    Very well done, Dee

    Old leaf covered bridge

Amid the white birch trees. How beautifully your words do justice to this fabulous picture and the peace it instills in the reader. The 4th and 5th stanzas are poignantly beautiful. The world today is so full of information overload that people don't seem to have the time to really stop and think about fine poetry such as this. May Autumn find you soon, and she will, because she knows you are one of her special admirers. I am too. Stay cool!

Thank you, Wesley, I do for sure await with anticipation those cool days of Autumn. When I lived in Washington I always looked forward to the changing of the leaves, their majestic colors. Here in Phoenix we don't see much of that, though.
      Stay safe

Beautiful! Autumn is my most favorite time of the year. The colors take my breath away, and I have woods as my backyard. The folage become brilliant and I am truly one who love sweater/jacket weather. This is lovely Dee.

"as leaves fall and school bells ring
    the trees rehearse their play
of dancing naked in the rain
for all the world to see"

What a grand contralto you've written with this stanza. I wish you well in the challenge dear sister. Breathtaking!

    Always ♥

    "...the trees rehearse their play

You captured in a clever sentence
    Fall's stripping of leaves,
    persistent rain...

    The entire piece welcomes
    Autumn so perfectly, catz!

It doesn't look like we will get Summer around here. There have only been
a few days in the 80s and a couple in 90s. Other than that it took forever
to hit the 70s and it was only 68 today. Last Winter was so long and bitterly
cold I hope we aren't in for a repeat.
I love Autumn and the changing colors but it always reminds me that
Winter is right around the corner.

    Hugs...Eddy

Truly a beautifully written piece filled with vibrant autumn imagry.

I'm looking forward to the change of season myself although in my area we haven't had anything close to a "normal" summer...very wet and relatively mild.

    A very enjoyable read, Dee.

Lovely and with such discriptive phrases you do not even care that it does not rhyme...It reads like it does...

It is hot plus extremly high humidity here but like you we have wonderufl airconditioning...long as we don't get a hurricaine and lose power...but at l east then the wind is blowing and it is barable...I would love to enter this contest but with being gone in a couple of days and not having a computer for a month it would be unfair...next time...

I was surrprised there was no sonnets allowed...just when I am getting good and woul dhave had the perfect one for this contest from my last class...and a well written one too...Oh well, next time...

So good luck in the contest...I see a trophy lurking in the shadows.. Hugs Darlene

    Dear Dee.

Usually, Autumn brings some of our best and most beautiful days in Christchurch/NZ. No longer too hot as in Summer with its Nor'westers nor the chilling Southerlies of Winter, but warm breezes from the East which gently stir the golden-amber carpets of leaves on lawns and roadsides throughout this "Garden City" as the last flowers of Summer shed their petals.
This year we almost missed Autumn as Winter arrived early to give us the coldest May/June weather on record. We even had snowfalls in our garden in June!
Now, when we are supposed to be in mid-Winter, after a bleak, miserable July, we are enjoying fine, sunny days with clear blue skies and, if it were not for the bare trees, one would think it was now Autumn here.
Yet further South and in the North Island, heavy snowfalls and mountain avalanches remind us that it is, indeed, Winter in New Zealabd.
Thankyou for your beautiful poem which is so well worded that I had almost reached the end of it before I realised it was not rhyming! LOL.
I love the picture too. A lovely Autumn woodland scene.
Good luck in the voting and thankyou for helping Blushfulmoon to set up this contest No.#47.
Love and hugs, XXX Hugh (R.)

Autumn has always been my most favorite season, and I was born the day after it began. It seems we are both domesticated critters, Dee. I certainly must have my air conditioning, as well as my source of heat once Winter finds its way back into my bones. Good luck in the contest, Sweetie. This is a lovely and true piece about the best season of all. Bring on the sweaters, the afghans, the stews, the hot chocolate, I say.

  • Very Nice

Dee, this is a wonderful poem about your antipation of autumn.
