A Southern Sonnet

Missing image

Sights of cotton fields do take me back when
as a tomboy, the land I so did love
and daddy my gift from above amen
taught me to walk those rows, our life thereof
I drug a tow sack, I did like a boy
I stuffed it with bolls until it was full
yes towing that sack was my prize of joy
like most of them, I was tough as a bull
Though my daddy he was so proud of me
he said, someday soon you should be a girl
so you can fall in love and live blessed be
with one who will send your heart for a whirl
Yes those cotton fields, they take me back when
1859 I re-live again

I think it' s beautiful! I like the picture too. By the way is there a special meaning in the 1859 year? Why did you choose exactly this year for your verse?

The tempo and movement compliment the sonnet form. The images evoke strong emotions for the reader as the rhyme tighten the lines up. Lovely subject to take the reader through history of hand harvest of cotton. Lovely work

  • I was transported back in time to my childhood !!

A trip down memory lane...of those unforgettable moments of a bygone era never to come back again..come what may.
comes alive in Dixie Dawn's latest piece of poetry!
The poem rekindles some of my own cherished memories of childhood..dreams of a young boy oblivious of the stains of setbacks...life was so different and uncomplicated back then..

Thanks Dixie for taking me on a carousel of joy...to a phase where life charted a serene course..

I can only write what a poem brings to me, I only went with the shortcomings blurb because of the image itself.

But you write some of the most amazing poems dedicated to the South and our history.

I am blessed to have someone that can express those things well.

yes and that is the god given truth, all places on the earth have shortcomings and splendors. And of course I set that in a framework of praise not disdain.

I love DD's poems and would never diss anything anyboday says anyways, so lets have a nice cool glass of lemonade and enjoy this fine summers day.

            God bless.

ahh sweetheart as long as you know how beautiful and true it is. The red neck stuff and stereotypes get old . Dixie does indeed write our history with the honesty and beauty it deserves.

My sentiments exactly, if we all learn to live together in our own backyard, then perhaps we can turly make the world a better place for all of us to live.

                Sign of peace.
