A profusion of vehicles are maneuvering to park,
Bringing food, cheer and surprises to the masses.
Colorful stands, wagons and rides add that spark.
Vendors struggle to get situated by dark,
Hungry crowds are moving like molasses;
A profusion of vehicles are maneuvering to park.
Soon the crowds cheer, babies cry, dogs bark,
They marvel at the horses, sheep and even asses.
Colorful stands, wagons and rides add that spark.
Folks try the midway rides and games on a lark,
Tour horticulture building to see flowers and grasses;
A profusion of vehicles are maneuvering to park.
Bouncing between attractions like a wayward quark,
So much to see, where do they issue gate passes?

The butter sculptors have outdone themselves, I remark,
All this food is producing unpleasant bodily gasses!

Ah, the Iowa State farm. I think I once read about a Butter Cow there? It even inspired me to write a silly story about a butter moose, lol
I've been to only one fair my entire life but I had fun.

A good villanelle is nothing to sneeze at, and I think you've done a commendable job here. The poem makes sense and flows well, which can be hard to do when sticking to a specific form. I went to our local fair just last week and I think you've captured the atmosphere well.

Very nice job. I know how difficult villanelles can be just to write, but you have to make the poem make sense and I had no trouble reading your poem. An A+ for originality (never had a villanelle written for a contest of mine before), an A+ for degree of difficulty and an A+ for making the hustle and bustle of the Iowa State Fair seem very real to a Wisconsinite. Mind you, these A+s mean nothing in the judging, but well done nonetheless.

Incidently ...
I was joking about the "gasses", in case somebody takes the comment seriously. This is a very thoughtful and well executed villanelle. -
Reading that last stanaza ...
makes me have second thoughts about attending the State Fair. Seems like all those "gasses" might make things unpleasant, and particularly being hooked up with the odors from the animal paddocks.
