Papa Goes Down to the Bar

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy…

Papa goes down to the bar at night,
to have him a glass of brew.
Now it don’t matter who ain’t around,
he sets him a rack or two.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyy…

Papa goes down to the bar,
papa goes down to the bar.
My momma’s waiting with the food,
but papa goes down to the bar.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy…

Then in walks Mabel with her sweet Abel,
they wanta dance the Virginia reel.
Along with Mrs. Spark and her hubby Mark,
they waltz with an uneven keel.

Here comes Miss Charm the local school marm;
she sits with papa while they play nine-ball.
She bends o’er the table papa looks where able;
and orders a beer for all.

Hey, it’s Friday night as they have a ball,
you can’t see Monday from here.
They pass the hat for the juke box,
and drink yet another beer.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyy…

Papa goes down to the bar,
papa goes down to the bar.
My momma’s waiting with the food,
but papa goes down to the bar.

{repeat chorus twice and fade}

Author notes

A song detailing the age-old bad habits of men, and the exuberance of Friday night, which is payday for most people.

    And when papa does return
    that nagging will begin
    But it don't bother papa much
    since he's had a quart of gin

    For gin and beer a mixture true
    to dull the hearing fine
    As papa now drifts off to sleep
    and all fades inside mind...lol

    I've known a few of them papas in my lifetime..

    THIS IS A GREAT SONG

    This one hell of a song...and so true ...I had a neighbor just like this one time...with a nagging wife...so on friday night he got off from work and went to the bar for some R&R he called it....she'd wait supper, nag him...but he never changed.....this an excellent write and poetic versification on a real life venture.
    I can hear this as country music or blues...I sure like to hear you sing it....Novy

    I love you
