Someone said that God is dead.
But I think they have bad information.
I just spoke with Him this morning.
His strength was fine;
and He was in good Spirit.
Normally, they call in the family members
when it gets close, you know, one last chance to say
the things you always meant to.
I got no call.
There must be some misunderstanding.
Besides,
if He HAD died,
how might a single obituary describe Him
whom the annals of history
and all of nature continue to reveal?
And who
would deliver the eulogy for the One
who spoke,
and His words whirled the worlds in place,
just as He had conceived,
and which continue to hold all things together?
No matter how great an orator,
he'd surely fall apart.
I can't imagine putting God in a box--
even the most skillfully crafted.
And where, I ask, do you bury
one who measures the heavens
in the span of His hand,
and for whom the earth is a footstool?
And how much would THAT lot run you?
I'm just not sure “He was never born,
but dwells outside of time” would fit
before the dash on the headstone.
And after the dash, well
you see I am not convinced.
Because I recognize Him
within the deep birth-groans
of the earth and seas
and again, upon the waves
of a swallow's song.
I have noted how mighty oaks
prostrate themselves
as He passes through
and crashing oceans
acquiesce to soft, sandy borders
at His command.
I have smelled his perfection
deep in folds of roses
and upon my baby's sweet breath.
Under our roaring sun-star
(perfectly placed to sustain life
but not consume us)
what sort of creature wakes
with such coffee-straw vision and reports
that there is no longer One greater
than himself?
Yes, someone is spreading misinformation.
And God, very much alive,
and relevant,
sits in the heavens and laughs.

Perhaps then we might have had a chance

30 old applause
