Tunnel Vision

Someone said that God is dead.

But I think they have bad information.
I just spoke with Him this morning.

His strength was fine;

and He was in good Spirit.

Normally, they call in the family members
when it gets close, you know, one last chance to say
the things you always meant to.
I got no call.
There must be some misunderstanding.

Besides,
if He HAD died,
how might a single obituary describe Him
whom the annals of history
and all of nature continue to reveal?

And who

would deliver the eulogy for the One
who spoke,
and His words whirled the worlds in place,

just as He had conceived,

and which continue to hold all things together?
No matter how great an orator,
he'd surely fall apart.

I can't imagine putting God in a box--
even the most skillfully crafted.
And where, I ask, do you bury
one who measures the heavens
in the span of His hand,
and for whom the earth is a footstool?
And how much would THAT lot run you?

I'm just not sure “He was never born,
but dwells outside of time” would fit
before the dash on the headstone.
And after the dash, well
you see I am not convinced.

Because I recognize Him
within the deep birth-groans
of the earth and seas
and again, upon the waves
of a swallow's song.
I have noted how mighty oaks
prostrate themselves
as He passes through
and crashing oceans
acquiesce to soft, sandy borders
at His command.

I have smelled his perfection
deep in folds of roses
and upon my baby's sweet breath.

Under our roaring sun-star
(perfectly placed to sustain life
but not consume us)
what sort of creature wakes
with such coffee-straw vision and reports

that there is no longer One greater
than himself?

Yes, someone is spreading misinformation.
And God, very much alive,
and relevant,

sits in the heavens and laughs.

Ah...My dear friend, I do commend you for this write...So refreshing to read the applause you give to attesting God is alive, and all your reasons...The most thought provoking a scribing on such a subject..Fantastic argument on the question, and so scripturally sound..Silver well deserved here!

Loved this. Most people who claim God is dead, deep down, believe in him. They are mad at him for not doing what they wanted; or preventing some horrific experience that this life if full of. I always compare claiming that God doesn't exist ignores what most religions agree on, That God is concealed; his revelation is one of his gifts. One who create on a grand scale, who is outside of time, could easily hide from limited man. And zipping down ones pants, and pissing in his direction, shaking puny fist, hmm. It is like shooting a hunting rifle at a hovering flying saucer. He came from somewhere, a long way off with superior technology. You want to risk angering them by shooting your pop gun?

    • Hmmmm. I get what you're saying about Him being concealed...but I think it is not so much that He is hidden as much as it is that we are blind, or of shallow vision. Even Paul said we "look through a glass darkly." Romans speaks about how God has revealed himself to all humanity through nature so that we are without excuse for not recognizing him. Even those who have not had the benefit of hearing about the greatest revelation of Himself-- Jesus, can see evidence of Him in the all of creation. It is only that we chose not to see. Yes, because of disappointment and misunderstanding, or maybe intellectual piety. Whatever the reason, we miss our direction if we chose not to read the signs.

    powerful response to prompt

"...the deep birth groans of the earth ... "
    A memorable line among many.
I'll come back to this later and peel some layers but I'm particulary struck by the poet's intimate relationship with a living god and the credibility that accrues to the witness.
    Good stuff, ten.

I have to chuckle at the point of view that people who seek knowledge assume they already have it all, or so much. There are men, people who work with science and who believe in God, Einstein's: God does not play dice with the universe; Gallileo who suffered for his faith, and so many giants of science who professed belief. There is certainty in faith, not in science...in science we simply explore, question forever each conclusion, nothing is absolute nor final; faith is within and a set of eyes that have their own way of seeing. So i think it is amusing, these foot soldiers of science, who know so much...but could probably not really tell us how a light bulb works...PK

    • The more you know...

...the more you realize you DON'T know.

I have a friend who is going blind, literal tunnel vision. She often has to turn her head completely to see things that are naturally apparent from our different, less limited perspective. I love what you said about the limitations of science...and then there's faith.

Well, the phrase "God is Dead" comes from Nietzsche and I don't believe he was commenting on God as we perceive him but upon the man-made conventions that we created to worship him. Nietzsche was looking for values beyond Christian values. I don't pretend to understand it.

As an Agnostic I'm not going to pass judgment either way. Whether his exists, doesn't exist or is in some half-way configuration neither of us can comprehend.

I hope he's as people say and that he exists, but as beautiful as your baby's sweet breath is, I don't think that constitutes proof. Though it does make for some lovely lines of faith and belief in the poem. But I'll just remain on the sidelines unknowing, but assuming one thing...that no one else knows either.

Ask God to stop the rain, I'm sick of it.

    • The quote God is Dead is from one of Nietzsche's characters, a rather crazed fellow running around saying we have killed God... it was mean both as a point of humor, but also a statement that God is no longer culturally relevant. That we have, over time, dismissed him as a functioning influence upon our lives and culture.

Dissipation of a society/culture is a much more tragic end than eradication, because those who are affected do not notice the gradual destruction, but accept it, even embrace it as good and natural.

As for my baby's breath, it is sweet, but wasn't meant to PROVE anything. This poem represents a personal expression. I had considered putting in scientific proofs but they were too awkward and bulky for poetry, at least for my skill. And they really did not represent my goal which was to parody a cultural mistake, a major blind spot by using ridiculous overstatement, interjected with bits of my own personal expression.

Though science, history, and nature point to God, ultimately, belief is a matter of faith. Something each man is given to wrestle with for himself. And for me, belief is the only viable, logical, broad-minded way to go. And no one can deny my experience of Him.

Thank you so much, Yem, for leaving your thoughts. I am always glad to hear your unique perspective and interesting reflections. As for the rain...I'm enjoying ours, so you'll have to do the praying yourself.

I see much love here...and such a sweet buzz elevating a conundrum of wors to ponder. Whenever a human gives up on an Idea the idea is dead...although the premise is untouched. If we "kill" God...we kill him iside our heart...and leave his grace for other credentials. The great thing is we can always believe again...and resurrect his song...those who know this are forever grateful...

  • Ahh you sure know how to throw a spanner in the works Just amazing and wonderfully penned. Yes and how could all that beauty just possibly 'pop' into existence! Love it! best wishes with this

lol You know I often sit some nights and wonder how his humour is...because we as a human race have screwed things up so royally, if he didn't laugh he'd cry and seeing as we have had a drought here for over 10 years lol I suspect the laughing is in hysterical proportions. It's a shame he didn't leave an information booklet on Humans for dummies Perhaps then we might have had a chance Loved it bug C

I was talking to one of my men today, about bureaucratic meddling affecting our safety procedures. How someone whose total experience in the field is reading actuary tables of accidents and mandating policy. I stood on a dead branch inch and a half I cut a foot long. Many of the climbers who come out of line clearance, wont climb up a tree on a rope over a dead limb. I jumped up and down on it; 230 pound 51 year old. Said we could hang the truck on it. But; don't do that in a cottonwood... Then I told him of viet nam era policy guiding fast forward observers. The losses were high, from small arms. The range of rifles was 4500 ft. so. the authorities mandated flying above that height. The pilots ignored; there were very good Anti air gun crews in the area with 37 mm and 57mm cannons who wouldn't miss...
One pilot crapped his pants when a small missle flew by. He came back screaming about shoulder fired heat seeking missles being out there. "Yes, we knew they were there; but ineffective under 4500 ft. and since you don't fly that low, we didn't tell you..." Not to mention you can't do the job of scouting from that high. And they were wasting pilots they spent million on training. On aircraft worth about 5 million.

That is so wrong on so many levels...
You reckon we have screwed up church, too?
The big part of the God exercise is to remain concealled, and see what the people will do with the gift of life; and of the world... You don't take back a child's gift if he miss uses it.
And there is mostly man making decisions on the organised religion thing. Jesus got the maddest at them for being blind guides and laying burdens on people, while not helping with the loads; of not entering a relationship with god, and hindering those who were.

      The guide is the Bible...

Understand its inspiration is from God, but the translation is from man. There is still great guidance, and beauty; we ignore it at our peril.

"The eyes of the Lord go to and fro among the earth; seeking one whose heart is completely his; that he might fully support him"

" The lord is very close to the broken hearted"

"In this world you will be shaken; but don't be discouraged; I have overcome the world."
