Comb my hair with your fingers,
tie up all of my wild locks
braid them tight and dye them to gold.
Put hundreds of small crystal bells
to jingle their gentle sound
while I dance in the middle
of wheat and poppy fields,
toes and nails green of grass
and soles dirty of wet ground.
Dress me with old fashioned gown,
ragged hem and patches at elbows
don’t wait for midnight,
don’t look around for the pumpkin chariot.
All my life I was your princess
without a shoe of glass.
Sing to me and play the flute as Pan,
or the accordion, if you prefer.
Watch me and listen to my voice while I sing
the unknown language-of-love song
with too many syllables
and vowels.
Slowly, undress me slowly, with patience,
before all my clothes decay to mud
and desert my flesh.
Wrap my naked body with silky ribbons,
the color of rainbow and summer rain,
put them around my wrists
and ankles and waist.
Paint my lips with your carnal kisses,
make love to me in the middle of the field
let moles and mice and squirrels
and larks envy us.
