The Long Ride Home

We keep looking back over our shoulders
Maybe searching for the last hurrah
On the look out for some reason
To relive some of our faded dreams
Some days were better than others
But it was getting hard to separate
Which ones suited us like armour
Others we left alone like a pariah

As the days grew even longer
We were even farther than we knew
And the sunsets seem to gather
On the long, long ride back home

Oh! those nights of lost endeavors
When we even lost the stars
Huddled inside our striped pajamas
All alone shivering with our pride

So wake me up when we have made it
Shake me gently in case I cry
It's been a long way here to this place
It's been a long, long ride back home

This poem is imbued with a deep sense of longing and a search for fulfillment, a spiritual awakening and homecoming. Poignant and profound.

    Well done,
    Bill

you have taken imagination to a new level and written a poem that makes some sense with the thoughts that you shared. The last line is so perfect and ties all the other lines together nicely. Well done and good luck in the contest. joy
