City Night

Rain washes dust from an ugly city street,
cars sliding into poles, dogs digging holes.
A slippery fate and some escape we meet,
see you on the other side as the thunder rolls.

Walking to the train, bumping into strangers,
the night coils around us wet and grey.
Sore lungs, exhaust fumes, invisible dangers,
scurrying hunched, eyes down, natures prey.

Sitting on a suitcase waiting for a mark,
house under your crack and not on your back.
Give in, put the cup down, do it for a lark,
cold hands with spare change to feed your stack.

Smokers in a corner, all dying together,
nicotines brothers in arms.
Penance drawn from the weather,
shivers paid in alms.

Watching the lights entice,
skimming customers off the sidewalk.
Smell the kitchen spice,
all the coffee and the talk.

Warm inside, safe,
spend your money, fill your tummy.
Cold and hungry waif,
no wolves here, just milk and honey.

Make a run for it,
watch your step, pavement cracked.
Sleeting down, rivulet,
pebbles grave to break your back.

Watch the clean dark stone,
take the easy way.
In the city your not alone,
keep walking and it will be okay.

Walking through a sudden downpour, making my way towards a train and home. These are exactly the things that stood out to me as I daydreamed my way through the newly wet streets, trying to maintain dignity amidst natures assault on man's creations.

My goodness! A real gem of a poem! Wonderful flow. Nice rhymes, all those ‘R’ rolls – rain-street-roll-train-strangers . . . that gives a harsh sound, but the meter, (the movement and the pause) I felt it, lends the tone of the quiet pathos – gloom, the futility of all, Oh! City-dwellers where do we go?
I simply like your poem, my friend, if I can call you so.

I like the poem, full of action, yet each image is complete. The actions go in a faster pace, but the pauses in your verse slow it down, the fraction of the time to let the reader rest and contemplate. Hmm?
Make a run … your back stanza was Oh! My oh! My, superb. I am going to read all the rest of your work

I am writing this comment with the contentment of reading a good piece of literature.

It is one of my better attempts to convey thoughts and feelings in a pleasing way to the mind and tongue. Most of my words here are just practice with form, this is one of my first attempts at a real poem. It was one of those things I just had to write while it was on my lips.

  • i like the way you rhyme...it all comes together in quite a clever kind of way. rhyming can be challenging with all the usual pitfalls for words that match up! you made it seem fresh and new with this piece. thank you for sharing. keep up the great work. peace and light always, kp

I really enjoy the challenge of constricted forms, the effort of making things fit and making words jump to my command is enjoyable. I think the challenge in making it appear effortless is trying to actually impart something to a reader rather than just showing off with pretty words
