The Elvish Knight

A knight came out of the fairy land

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And he’s asked a lady for her hand

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

First go and fetch me your father’s chest

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And then put on your Sunday best

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Go down to the stable and meet me there

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And it’s I on a colt and you on a mare

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

It was she on the white and he on the bay

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

Three hours before the break of day

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

It was he as the groom and she as the bride

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And they rode till they came to the cold river’s side

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Dismount, dismount my lady fair

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

For it’s six pretty maids I have drowned there

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Take off, take off your silken gown

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

For it’s much too fine to sink and drown

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

First draw your sword and crop those thistles

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

For I can’t abide their jags and bristles

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Then he’s turned around for to crop them all

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And she’s catch’d him around the waist so small

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Then she’s thrown him over the water’s brim

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

Oh I’ll surely drown for I cannot swim

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Lie there, lie there in the water deep

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

Now close your eyes and go to sleep

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Then she’s up on her horse and she’s rode away

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

Three hours before the break of day

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Now a magic bird in her window high

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

It’s begun to prattle and begun to cry

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Oh do not prattle and do not scold

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And your cage shall be made of the finest gold

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Now her father on hearing the bird did say

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

Oh why do you sing at the break of day

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

There came an old tomcat my life to take

With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o

And I called to my mistress so she would wake

As the willow grows in the dene-i-o

Author notes

This is my own, original version of Child Ballad 4. Don't worry about metre - it's a folk song, and you fit the words to a tune.

Whoa! "Dismount, dismount my lady fair With the gold and the grey and the green-i-o For it’s six pretty maids I have drowned there As the willow grows in the dene-i-o" that I did not see coming haha. He doesn't sound like a very good knight haha. Great write

Oh, my goodness. This is a violent poem! I can understand killing the magic bird, -- but this?

Should "the" be "they" in this line?
"And they rode till the came to the cold river’s side"

It's a traditional ballad, and that's how the story ends!

      (Thanks - well-spotted typo)

I hope the good poets don't all bleed off of here: I've been on here too short a period of time! What a wonderful folksong with a twist!

Please forgive my short comment but I don’t want a computer to rate what I have to say. Since you can’t do it anymore; as always I enjoyed reading your poem and thank you for being a part of my online poetry life.

    Love,

Oh! I love the story ballads, many of those heard from the older folk still go through my mind now and then. This one would be perfect to pass down to the young ones. It's a fine ballad!

Well you can make up your own tune, Lady E. Everyone else seems to be doing so.

      Thank you.

  • OK shoot me the only song I know on my guitar is Froggie went a-courtin' - and yes it works very well to that.

This has all the classic elements of folksong, Mairi - a good story, a refrain and it's also over-long, like a lot of the old ballads. Lol!

    Very well done,

    Bill

Exactly what I was aiming for. Oh, you forgot to say that it doesn't make a whole heap of sense.

Bad salads or bad ballads Just joking of course for this is a delight to roll off the tongue to the tune in my head (which is irish of course ) sadly my time at AP is coming to an end too, I fear the changes are too much to bear so am taking me and my words elsewhere. Hope to see you at 'starlitecafe.com' and hugs for everything Mairi, one of the 'real' people on here C

I don't want you to go. I don't want this constant bleeding of some of the best poets here. But thank you for your compliment, and I certainly will look you up at starlitecafe.

Well now, this ballad I always assumed to be English; but I showed it to a friend who picked out a tune on a guitar for it... then he stopped and said, "No, damn it, that's 'The Bonny, Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond' with a few extra notes!" So I guess one simply fits a tune to it in one's head.

I'd love to hear your Irish tune. Make a video of yourself singing it, and put it on Youtube!

  • LMAO I was actually humming along with this one. What the ??? Maybe i have lost it lol. (some say I never had it) Very impressive and I quite like how you did this piece..Interesting Unique One.

    Love
