The Monarch Butterfly

From chrysalis palace this beauty born,
a single part of nature's wondrous sights.
In flower filled meadows the grass so green;
sunlight upon fluttering wings, pristine.
Her colors are a festival of lights,
never will you be left feeling forlorn.

A monarch resplendent; she is serene,
the butterfly in winged flight, a queen.

The flower filled gardens she does adorn,
carrying one's senses to endless heights.
Beneath powder blue skies in air so clean,
the most beautiful sight I've ever seen.
Having no remorse for thoughts she incites,
through the butterfly I will be reborn.

Author notes

My rhyme scheme for your Butterfly Sonnet form was abccba cc abccba. I realize that I didn't use the 11 syllables and if you wish to DQ that will be ok. It's been a while since I have written and I do love sonnets.

Fantastic Joyce. Such imagery and it evokes such tranquility for a mid summers day of butterfly watching. Makes me remember The monarchs i saw floating gracefully around my yard. Don't feel bad about not writing alot...its been 2 years that i have posted something worthwhile and life is way more important to take care of before spending 24/7 here. OR even at Facebook. LMAO!

I will write again when i feel the urge, the inspiration. For now i focus on my college classes. Great poem

How lovely! As to syllable count, when I used 11 in my example it was when I had feminine endings on my iambic meter. Straight iambic pentameter or isosyllablic would normally be 10 syllables--as you have done (except I only count 9 in the second line of the couplet).

That was a challenging rhyme scheme you chose! I'm glad you picked up the gauntlet of my challenge.

I particularly enjoyed the final two lines:
"Having no remorse for thoughts she incites,
through the butterfly I will be reborn." I like that. Being incited by a butterfly.

A very nice entry, thank you.

  • Ahhh, you have handled this form like a pro. So nice to see you writing again. This was just a delight to read and enjoy. Well done. ~Pamela

Pam, Thank you for your words of praise and the applauses. You know I love sonnets and though I didn't follow this to a "T" it just jumped out at me. I hadn't even seen you in it till after I wrote. Yours blew me away as always. I'm so happy you enjoyed mine and I will try to be here more. Thank you for the applauses also, though it's your words that mean the most to me. Wishing you the best this week. I hope all goes off without a hitch. Love ya my dear friend, Joyce

    Wonderful!

Good to see you're back, Joyce! And this sonnet is wonderful work, as usual, even if it is not 11-syllabled. I hope the poem is accepted in the contest, because it is as wonderful to read as a butterfly is wonderful to view. The metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly is the natures own symbol for rebirth, as the caterpillar seem to die when it goes into chrysalis, only to be reborn as a butterfly angel... Please be back to stay, Joyce, and soar like a butterfly! Jim

Jim, Thank you my dear sweet bro for this beautiful comment on my work. Nature is something that has always been a love of mine and the butterfly personifies it in so many ways. Thank you also for the applausses, though your words mean the most to me. I have missed you and writing. It's been a rough road and it is still very bumpy. I'm praying every day for normalcy. I will try to be here more and for now sending a big and to you and the family. Love from your sis, Joyce
