Awaiting my death sentence
The judgment passed on me
No matter my own repentance
Day pass in a now unfamiliar world
Rolling on forever outside my window
While my cellmate and I watch
Prepared for deaths merciful blow
The tubes and wires won’t let me move
Keeping me in torturous pain, unending
Unwelcomed foe has set up inside me
Its untreatable reaction has my life pending
Spectators watch my last minutes waiting
For what’s inside to eat away my body
Loosening my soul to what will await me
Merciful death releasing the chains of my disease
I am Free…
Author notes
Dedicated to my grandfather Kenneth O'neal Smith (1929-1993)As well as my dear friend Meaghans grandmother. Both who were taken from this world far to early. Also in dedication to everyone who has died from cancer.
I also know that is isnt the best poem I've written and it seems kinda raw. Its hard for me to put my usual emotion into this poem because of the painful memories brought on by thinking of my grandfather. But please sudgestions are welcome and wanted.
R.I.P. Grumps we still miss you every day and I cant wait until I see you again on the other side.
Thank you to Sue Caldwell for her help on this poem.

Makes Poeple Think
This is a good piece of work that shows heart and soul. It might not always sound right to you but to your readers it flows well and runs out to an ending that most can feel. These kind of poems are also hard for me to write do to so much feeling should go into it in your mind. I am sorry for your loss and your friends loss.

Thanks. These poems like this are usually based out of a "need to write" to get the emotion in feeling out. Poetry is really my best way to express any strong emotion I'n feeling. Thats my secret to putting alot of emotion into my poetry.

Wow; this was truly, deeply intense
with emotion & the ache of watching
a loved one pass away. But at the end
you send out a message of hope...
that they are free of the illness,
flying with the angels in Heaven
watching over us.
Beautiful & touching write.
Best of luck & thanks for entering

Such difficult things to write about: helplessness, pain, loss. Words will never describe all we feel. But of course, we try. Poignant and beautiful.

As someone who has been though such a lost I can well understand this piece
You have captured some of the feelings well Though i have to say those i know who have passed with this disease (and i have had six in my close and extended family)
They each faced it in such a way as one would not believe with such calmness
The final line says more to those who have stood by watching ( i know I felt that way with my wife) than words can say.
To have the freedom of knowing that the suffering is over is such a relief
A fine poem one to take pride in
Excellent

I'm sorry that you ahve had to go through it. I lost 3 of my 4 grandparents to cancer as well as the better part of my great grandparents as well and I know the odds are that I will probably have it one day as well. I've also lost friends to it some as young as 23. Thank you for the kind words though. They are greatly appreciated.

This is a very moving and heartfelt personal piece. I think we are all affected by knowing someone who has died from cancer. A good poem
