At First I Was Intrigued (Sonnet 11 of When You Were Mine)

At first I was intrigued, then I was mad
for you.  I unexpectedly fell hard.
How could I not when seeing your heart’s glow
(a soul I wanted very much to know),
delighted by my playful fellow bard?
So many months your presence made me glad.

However much I wanted you as mine,
the fruit of my love died upon your vine.

I was wreathed in smiles, now I find I’m clad
in rainbow tears of ashen colors marred
by pain.  Infatuation had to go
when love between us would not grow.  Not so?
I’ll mend my heart and reinstall my guard.
We’ll never know the love we could have had.

Author notes

Butterfly Sonnet (rhyme scheme abccba dd abccba; volta somewhere within Lines 6 - 8). Intentional variations to meter in Lines 3, 8, and 9.
