walking through a forest of feelings,
I kept my eyes towards tough trunks
that might have barred my winding way;
kept my chin raised and forward,
listened, sharply, for prick of sound,
thinking I would not mistakenly miss
a single loving moment.
such sights, such meetings
in such meandering
flew with birds,
flitted with other winged things
wrote your name in stringing clouds
across a billowing blue sky
bent to tiny tempting symbols,
saw meanings in minute things,
side-stepped bogs and bilious benign
sopping suggestions stewing and forgotten
oh, love, I lost you in suggestions
that fogged my sight with green shadows
turning dark at brow of earth
turning to slump away, lost and feeling foreign,
I saw I had trod upon a darling daisy
turned pale and crushed
for not being noticed
