Shaded in sorrow

Missing image

She looks in the mirror
And sees
Red.
Scarlet ~ splattered
across her cheeks
and shadowed
around her eyes.

She doesn’t know this woman
Shaded in sorrow
Tasting pain
Like bitter Burgundy
Turned acid on her tongue

She sees Crimson
Smeared
Around her chin
Down her neck.
Speckling her breasts
That weep failure
And a mothers milk.
Anger sweeps
In ruby
Rage
Deep within her abdomen.
Where her womb still weeps
The blood that spilled
Them out into the world.

33 weeks
she carried them
Loved them
Cherished them
Before she pushed them out
Into this godforsaken world.

Dead
Oh God, her sons are dead.

There is no hope
Found in this staining red.

Author notes

I knew when I saw the photo where this one was going, just not how it was going to get there. A woman on one of the boards I belong to delivered her twin sons last week. They were stillborn at 33 weeks. My heart aches for her.

  • Wow...this is really truly powerful... the piece has so much raw emotion, and tells the story of the picture so well, and to find out it was a true situation. That would be horrible. You've done a wonderful job writing of this pain. And I love the title of this piece and how it is used and displayed so well in this poem. Great write poet. Thank you for sharing your work.
