White As Dirty Snow

Missing image
"Angel wings is white as snow
and you ain't goin' to Heaven
ain't got wings as white as snow

Your soul is gonna burn in Hell
your skin is dark as dirty snow
your soul is gonna burn real slow"

So says the hateful ol' white man
born and raised in a pure white land
never set foot in the streets of Harlem

'Till one day he tripped and fell
dirtied his white wings when he fell
now dark as dirty snow - they smell

Just like death in blazing Hell
his wings is gonna burn in Hell
and his soul is gonna burn real slow

Author notes

Inspired by the poem, "Angels Wings" by Langston Hughes; and dedicated to the memory of Langston Hughes, poet, columnist, dramatist, essayist, lyricist, novelist, social activist, writer, and creator of the blues poetry form (1902-1967).

"Hang yourself, poet,
in your own words.
Otherwise, you are dead."
~Langston Hughes, 1964

  • This left me almost speechless. I love the "blues with a vengeance poetry" idea. The poem says a lot about our society then as well as now. Voices like I hear in your poem and the great man who inspired it will perhaps change this world of ours. As I write this comment the words,"skin as dark as dirty snow" keeps echoing in my head. That is a good thing cause I won't forget your poem. I really loved it.

    • Thank you for stopping by to read my work...

Your words left a cold chill down my spine and up & down my arms... I cannot imagine how it was ever allowed to have had the races of color being treated so inhumanely. The idea of it all really makes me angry. So this is what I felt like writing after I read some of Langston Hughes's poetry. His voice: filled with all the pain and agony of his people, the sorrow of the world upon his shoulders, and the suffering through his own life's experiences; it just made my heart cry out for vengeance. Hopefully soon, hopefully the world will live in peace... That is all I wish for in this lifetime. Thanks again for stopping by, I hope your day is going great!! Keep well, Gypsy.
      peace, love & hugs,

    • Thank you, Mark!!

It's easy to find inspiration from Langston Hughes's work, he was a great poet with a real, human voice, who spoke for the people. I have his book "The Collected Poems" and am really enjoying it. Thanks again, I'm glad you appreciate the poem, and the blues format. I hope you're having a great weekend!!
      Cheers!!
