out of the rain

I saw the storm coming,
dark brooding clouds
distant rumbling

I watched it roll in
but wishful thinking
held me in place,
kept me from seeking shelter

… until the downpour arrived

Standing there exposed
soaked to the bone, shivering
miserable and alone
I yelled at the universe “Why me?!?”

And God answered
with whispers of encouragement,
purpose, hope

I stopped feeling sorry for myself
took responsibility for my life
gathered resources, made choices
… bought an umbrella

                        e      n
                  p                  e
and      o                                d          it

To my surprise, the sun
appeared once more
burning away the dampness and fog
giving me clear sight
and a warm spirit

Now, I'm prepared
for the next
storm

Its good that you're prepared for the next storm but may I suggest that its really the wishful thinking that gets us through. I found you through your grandson who I found through I don't know how. You should be very proud of him - he's doing a great job.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for taking the time to comment. I guess we all have different beliefs about what gets us thru life's storms and challenges ... but "wishful thinking" has not been MY source of strength. "Wishful thinking" is what I do when I ponder what I might get for a birthday gift! My faith and belief in God has pulled me thru many a difficult circumstance and given me hope and direction when I couldn't think myself out of a paper bag. That's how I know I am prepared to face whatever obstacles I may encounter on my life's path ...and that's what "mets me through".

And I'm so glad you enjoy my grandson's writings. I'm (always) extremly proud of him!!

Good use of metaphor. I agree that is a thoroughly explored theme, but nevertheless, you grabbed me with it. I wish you had more poetry to read.

unique write given a well worn theme, bravo. i do like the stanza opening "and god answered..." - wonderfully soft counterpoint to the crescendo of emotion just before it. nice poem.

    Interesting

I got a sense that being prepared for whatever
life brings your way, clears the fog and cobwebs.
making way for a sunny day. Nicely done

Thi is a excellent poem I love to write about thunder and lightening storms.
I watched it roll in but wishful thinking held me in place, kept me from seeking shelter. These are excellent I like thes lines. Thank you for penning such a wonderful poem, I really enjoyed reading your poem,

  • Clever!

I liked the imagery and a new take on the old "rain and sorrow" topic. Also, the way you shaped the umbrella and 'o-p-e-n-e-n-d' it was awesome. Nice!! ^^ And you're right; we DO need to take responsibilty and stop turning to others all the time for help to urn our lives right-side up.

    very good

unusually a relatively freeform poem free rfom obscurity and introspection that everyone can relate to. An optimictic poem that lifts the spirits.

You're walking on dirt road and it's about noon in flat-ass Texas. It starts to rain and hail it doesn't do any good to run...there's no place to hide. -c

  • Yes indeedy! ...

and so for every storm there is the sun (son) and the knowledge that we are not alone! Nicely shared tale of courage and hope! Just love that clear sight and warm spirit. joy

When we are down and feeling that we may never be able to stand again, it is such comfort to know God will always give us a helping hand ... if we just muster the strength and faith to reach for it. Thanks for you encouraging comments!

Thanks for your kind comments! It certainly is amazing how much we learn and grow during stormy times. And like you said, so worth it! Without the storms, we would have less appreciation of those times bathed in sunshine.
