puff puff--a daughters view

3 months in and you didn't know
I was living inside of you

puff puff on that cigarette

doctor said, "you've got to stop"
"here comes number four"

puff puff on that cigarette

you stopped.  dead.
completely off it.

puff puff no cigarette

heres you beautiful baby girl
misshapen nose, birth defect

puff puff, back to the cigarette

7 years later, several more puffs
the doctor says, "I can't help you"

puff puff, you need a cigarette

your family cries, stop it,
you're going to die

crush crush, good bye cigarette

too late for you, too late for life
its eaten everything away

death is all that remains......

Author notes

"love saved us"

i was born with a birth defect due to my mothers smoking. it wasn't so bad, my nose was collapsed at birth, and eventually it popped into normal-ish shape.

my mother died of cancer when I was nine, but was diagnosed when I was seven.

she died because of smoking.

Be scathing my darlings.

  • I love this ...

and your strength for your honesty . You were a very lucky young lady. The birth defect could have been more. I like the use of "puff, puff" to show the disreguard of someone elses health , or power of the hold smoking has on people. This piece is vivid and straight forward " crush crush, good bye cigarette

too late for you, too late for life
    its eaten everything away

death is all that remains......" Bravo !

I like the "puff puff" refrain.
