Home Town Hero

Long, golden summer days
watching the sun descend,
on the porch with the folks.

Winking fireflies at dusk
light the sweet meadow,
like a fairy tale story-land.

Folks watching Michael,
practice his one finger stand
on tap dancing hands.
Everybody saying,
“That boy's a wonder,
you ever seen the like?” and
“How in the world does he do that?”

He says it's easy...
makes it look that way too.
Says, at the county fair
an old guy taught him
to do it, that was
all there was to it.

Gary Moore called last week,
did you hear?
He wants our boy to appear
on “I've got a Secret”,
they'll be watching Michael
in living rooms everywhere.

Imagine that,
on TV for the second time
for goodness sakes.
Why he's famous!
We'll all be gathered
to watch for sure.

Have you told your friends,
how 'bout Aunt Lew?
She's 92, deaf and
blind as a bat, but
sharp as a tack.
She can sit there happy;
knowing something big
is going on.
She's always been
partial to Michael.

Wheat-straw hair
turning topsy-turvey,
million dollar smile
firmly in place...
he performs his amazing
~One finger Stand~

wow, this is so touching - it made me cry. You have so perfectly captured the adoring wonder of the folks back home, the way the porch looks and feels, the people who come to call, receiving the exciting news about a hometown boy... I love that you incorporated the little rhyme Michael said when asked how he learned: An old guy at the fair showed me to do it and that's all there was to it. I got such a kick out of that. Beautiful photo, too, which emphasizes the glory of that bygone summer. Thank you so much for this wonderful poem, rich in feeling of country life and pride.
