Weapons Of Mass Distraction

The weapons of mass distraction
Have wiped out worlds of joy
They’ve left behind the lame and blind
Left in their wicked wake
A trail of pale destruction
Turned every girl and boy
And mindless Mom and Dad they numb
To ghosts for goodness sake

Their vapors have invaded
Our very living rooms
Through T.V shows and videos
And lap-tops they advance
They’ve slyly infiltrated
Suburban white washed tombs
And turned our teens who gaze at screens
To zombies in a trance

Like nihilistic gases
So silently they seep
Into our lives and turn our wives
Our husbands and our kids
Into the mindless masses
The ones who walk in sleep
Who blankly stare at waves of air
Like vacant invalids

Like locusts and boll weevils
Which kill the cotton patch
Like spiral worms and viral germs
Insidious they spread
Their mass destructive evils
They snare and body snatch
The young and old whose hearts are cold
Just like the living dead

Extraordinary metaphor for what snatches our children from reality...

This reminded me of how much times have changed in the past thirty years when I was a kid. Leering around every corner is yet another "weapon of mass distraction" strangling the minds of our children. I have fallen into this trap many times before myself. What I love about your poetry is the visuals you create with such a creative blend of language. It often reminds me of a puzzle where certain pieces of it have a place in the art that was created just for them.

'tis, indeed, a very fine write, my friend. You have expressed your thoughts quite well. Thanks for sharing your poem with us. Again, well done.

    So we have been distracted
    By weapons for the masses
    A fate has been exacted
    On all the social classes

    To gaze in mindless wonder
    On T.V. screens which flicker
    While Earth is rent asunder
    And politicians snicker.

    Very clever. And very sad.

"T.V" is missing a full stop.

  • Just thinking about this just the other day! Fantastic title too!
This should be blasted world wide.
Super metaphor content too Mercury Rising!
