Miracle Growth

We purchase two rhododendrons on sale
and a bag of "Miracle Grow" soil --

dream of dazzling display next spring.

My gallant gouty gimp
digs two ample holes;
uproots an impressive boulder.

A soft drizzle begins ...

I offer to finish the task.
Grateful, he limps back into the house.

I dislodge stubborn rocks to allow
root growth, squishing grubs smugly
between gloved digits, till earth
peppered sweat drips into my eyes.

Fill holes halfway with miracle soil,
mix with existing dirt, clay and sand.
Extricate plants from tenacious tubs,
place base of growth level to ground,
pack with loam then tamp down firmly.

I pile displaced stones to one side,
lock tools in garden shed.

Scurry into the house just as ...

the downpour commences.

    And wait.
Your words could easily be mine right down to the help, only I baulk at squishing those mushy grubs. I am planting fruit trees now. You have perfected the poem down to a moment in time we can easily relate to and even with no rhyme it flows so well I didn't even miss it.

Very telling for those who love gardening, whose spouses don't. Yet to show their love, even in their personal discomfort, they tackle projects that mean nothing but labor to them, just to see the smile on our faces! Delightful "My gallant gouty gimp". Simpatico "squished grubs smugly" [most definitely, "between gloved fingers!"] Very nice "tenacious tubs". Lovely day's project. Enjoyable alliteration. The title could indicate the soil ammendment, or (more likely) the growing years that have bound devoted hearts, and helped them nourish one another's dreams.

Bill's the one who likes Rhododendrons, actually. He's my he-man/boulder guy -- digs holes for trees and extricates large rocks (TONS 0f ledge here). He also likes to add trees to our property, and actually researches them online to find which ones suit our climate and soil. I'm the day to day maintainence person, and the "finisher". I try to make it look nice.

Our dreams are entwined in our yard, so to speak.

Filled holes halfway with miracle soil,
mixed with existing dirt, clay and sand.
    Extricated plants from tenacious tubs,
carefully placed and leveled young bushes
    packed then tamped down firmly.

I piled rocks I had displaced from their habitat,
Iocked tools in my garden shed.

Scurried into the house just as ...

    the downpour began.'

nice thoughts crafted in good texture
All the best in my contest
