An Angel Undressed

I've been naked before you,
An angel undressed.
Nothing hidden or covered,
Showing hearts distress.

You'll find me there from time to time,
Lurking in the shadows,
Dancing round you in the distance,
Unclothed, unmasked.

Have you ever felt you exposed your heart to this degree?

  • And of course the question that comes to my mind is, when you are found, are you understood and received? For love has little point if it isn't reciprocated.

Of course this is a lovely poem about being free to give yourself without encumbrances, for I assume, you'll knoiw it will be received how it was given.

  • The last line like a mirror

The exposure here is unmistakeble and I liked the phrase "an angel undressed". What happened when I read this the first time is I thought you were speaking as yourself, however after the last line, I read it again, and it seems you may be speaking as the angel. Your last line is almost like a mirror. It reflects the reader back to the first line, and thus the whole poem, for a second look. If this was intentional, then how amazingly clever! If it wasn't intentional, then isn't it a clever mystery how we can become profound in simply making a honest statement?

Also, I read the title again and had the impression of the angel the second time. It's quite an experience!

I would have to answer your question "yes". Yet, when I wrote my poem about self-exposure, I felt ashamed because I thought I had revealed too much, and would thus drive the one I cared for away (so I entitled it "I Want To Hide"), but what I like most about your "exposure poem" is that is doesn't imply shame or regret for exposure, only the courage it took to expose. So whether it is the angel or yourself, this is an uplifting piece. I derived much from it (can you tell?).

    • I was speaking of myself, just referring to myself as an angel. It was one of the 1st poems I wrote when I began writing in April. I think I used the angel image to demonstrate that it was my spirit and heart that I had exposed. I am attempting to continue to expose it through my poetry. It is a healing and freeing expression, this painting with words.
