Remember the time
When the places we would pass
Were the places that we really meant to go;
And the places that we ended up in
We never really cared for them at all
So what are we doing here, kid?
I heard that life was made up of conversations that we have with strangers
Apples and gardens and kids in mangers
Books that tell us wrong from right
And where we’re ‘sposed to sleep at night
who to kill and who to love
what’s below and what’s above
our heads
I think that they were telling us the truth
only the good stuff’s worth believing without proof
Remember the time
Sleeping doves who mimic crows
lowest highs and highest lows
Time spent sticking stamps all over walls
Hoping that I’d get somewhere
Too little world and too many cares
I’ve got a question aching to get asked
Only thoughts of you are worth the trouble
I’m the wrap and you’re the bubble
Snap snap pop we go as people pinch our skin
I’ve been waiting far too long for this life to finally begin
I’m feeling tired
But there’s no sleep for frugal poets caught up in the day
Just step to my right and I won’t even see you walk away
So what are we doing here, kid?
I heard that life was made up of sleepy champagne toasts
Fathers, sons and holy ghosts
Prayers that keep us up too late
Moments never worth the wait
Black and white but never grey
Time reminds me what to say
To you
That Jesus wasn’t kidding us
No sin of man is worth the fuss
